The Greatest Benefit to Mankind: A Medical History of Humanity (The Norton History of Science)

The Greatest Benefit to Mankind: A Medical History of Humanity (The Norton History of Science) PDF Author: Roy Porter
Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company
ISBN: 0393242447
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 872

Book Description
"To combine enormous knowledge with a delightful style and a highly idiosyncratic point of view is Roy Porter's special gift, and it makes [this] book . . . alive and fascinating and provocative on every page."—Oliver Sacks, M.D. Hailed as "a remarkable achievement" (Boston Sunday Globe) and as "a triumph: simultaneously entertaining and instructive, witty and thought-provoking . . . a splendid and thoroughly engrossing book" (Los Angeles Times), Roy Porter's charting of the history of medicine affords us an opportunity as never before to assess its culture and science and its costs and benefits to mankind. Porter explores medicine's evolution against the backdrop of the wider religious, scientific, philosophical, and political beliefs of the culture in which it develops, covering ground from the diseases of the hunter-gatherers to today's threat of AIDS and ebola, from the clearly defined conviction of the Hippocratic oath to the muddy ethical dilemmas of modern-day medicine. Offering up a treasure trove of historical surprises along the way, this book "has instantly become the standard single-volume work in its field" (The Lancet). "The author's perceptiveness is, as usual, scalpel-sharp; his manner genially bedside; his erudition invigorating." - Simon Schama

ABUNDANCE, THE ASPIRATION AND HOPE OF ALL MANKIND

ABUNDANCE, THE ASPIRATION AND HOPE OF ALL MANKIND PDF Author: TOMBUH DAVID LATEH
Publisher: Notion Press
ISBN:
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 107

Book Description
The writer considers abundance as a concept that injects satisfaction and hope in the minds of all mankind. He is just excited with the expression ‘abundance.' He has immersed himself in the research of this concept. He therefore feels obliged to explain to his readers that the abundance mindset is the source of the abundance in our society. He feels that his duty to mankind calls on him to encourage his readers to acquire the abundance mindset as they seek abundance in wealth, position and influence. The abundance mindset is positive, optimistic, expansive, growth oriented and proactive. It is characterized the humanizing qualities of solidarity, sharing, cooperation, mutuality and human interdependence. Without these values in human hearts, the wealth that society produces no matter how plentiful, is hoarded, used greedily, egoistically and jealously by 'the powerful' in our society, bringing society back to poverty, want and scarcity. Acquiring the abundance mindset makes mankind want to share, care, excise solidarity and cooperation and in this way, abundance is multiplied in our society. The author has expanded on these themes deeply in this text making it useful to all categories of adult readers.

International Law and Outer Space Activities

International Law and Outer Space Activities PDF Author: Ogunsola O. Ogunbanwo
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 940119212X
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
Space exploration is a development which began with the launching of the first artificial satellite in 1957. Since then an incredible progress has been made, leading to the landing of man on the moon. A quick look at the number of launchings which have been registered with the United Nations will show the influence of space science and technology on human endeavours. For example, satellites can be used for com munication, weather forecasting, education, and remote sensing of the resources of the Earth. The United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space is the focal point of international co-operation in space activities. The Committee regulates these activities through its Legal Sub-Committee. The setting up of the Committee was preceded by an Ad Hoc Committee which was established on 31 December 1958. The initial difficulty which confronted the Ad Hoc Committee was the issue of its member ship. The USSR, Czechoslovakia and Poland decided not to participate in its work because they were dissatisfied with the composition of the Ad Hoc Committee. Later, both the UAR and India also decided not to participate in its work. Although the Ad Hoc Committee succeeded in producing a report in 1959 (UN document A/4141), the progress of work of the Main Committee was in limbo for a while. It was not until 1961 that the disagreements were resolved. The Committee conducts its business without voting -the Chairman simply states the consensus of views which have been expressed.

Mankind Beyond Earth

Mankind Beyond Earth PDF Author: Claude A. Piantadosi
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 0231531036
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 383

Book Description
Seeking to reenergize Americans' passion for the space program, the value of further exploration of the Moon, and the importance of human beings on the final frontier, Claude A. Piantadosi presents a rich history of American space exploration and its major achievements. He emphasizes the importance of reclaiming national command of our manned program and continuing our unmanned space missions, and he stresses the many adventures that still await us in the unfolding universe. Acknowledging space exploration's practical and financial obstacles, Piantadosi challenges us to revitalize American leadership in space exploration in order to reap its scientific bounty. Piantadosi explains why space exploration, a captivating story of ambition, invention, and discovery, is also increasingly difficult and why space experts always seem to disagree. He argues that the future of the space program requires merging the practicalities of exploration with the constraints of human biology. Space science deals with the unknown, and the margin (and budget) for error is small. Lethal near-vacuum conditions, deadly cosmic radiation, microgravity, vast distances, and highly scattered resources remain immense physical problems. To forge ahead, America needs to develop affordable space transportation and flexible exploration strategies based in sound science. Piantadosi closes with suggestions for accomplishing these goals, combining his healthy skepticism as a scientist with an unshakable belief in space's untapped—and wholly worthwhile—potential.
