Recent Advances in Measuring and Controlling Synaptic Communication

Recent Advances in Measuring and Controlling Synaptic Communication PDF Author: Jacopo Lamanna
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2832536379
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 117

Book Description
Synapses represent a unique neuronal compartment specialized in communication. The morpho-functional investigation of the synapse has always been hindered by its tiny size and high density of molecular elements, but specific technological and methodological advances helped us to reduce these limitations. As the matter of fact, in recent years, we have witnessed the continuous development of new methods allowing measuring and controlling synaptic activation both in vitro and in vivo. These include new genetically encoded sensors of synaptic exo-endocytosis, but also engineered synaptic proteins able to inhibit the release of neurotransmitters. Furthermore, new promising tools allow changing the functional properties of synapses in a plasticity-like manner. All these methodological advances are likely to generate unprecedented knowledge about the dynamics of synaptic transmission and plasticity at several levels of the nervous system. Nevertheless, in most cases, the implementation of these new methods remains technically demanding, likely due to the high complexity of their operating principle. Hence, it would be worth refining and potentiating these tools in order to extend the range of experimental settings for their application.

Computational Methods for Multi-Omics Data Analysis in Cancer Precision Medicine

Computational Methods for Multi-Omics Data Analysis in Cancer Precision Medicine PDF Author: Ehsan Nazemalhosseini-Mojarad

Book Description
Cancer is a complex and heterogeneous disease often caused by different alterations. The development of human cancer is due to the accumulation of genetic and epigenetic modifications that could affect the structure and function of the genome. High-throughput methods (e.g., microarray and next-generation sequencing) can investigate a tumor at multiple levels: i) DNA with genome-wide association studies (GWAS), ii) epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation, histone changes and microRNAs (miRNAs) iii) mRNA. The availability of public datasets from different multi-omics data has been growing rapidly and could facilitate better knowledge of the biological processes of cancer. Computational approaches are essential for the analysis of big data and the identification of potential biomarkers for early and differential diagnosis, and prognosis.

Schooling Indifference

Schooling Indifference PDF Author: John I'Anson
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1351654756
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 190

Book Description
This book is concerned with re-imagining Religious Education (RE) as this is practiced in schools, colleges and universities throughout the UK and in a wide variety of international educational contexts. On the basis of a critical analysis of current theory and practice in RE the authors argue that this educational framing is no longer plausible in the light of new theoretical developments within the academy. A new educational approach to RE is outlined that challenges students to think and practice differently. This includes a ‘becoming ethnographer’ approach that can acknowledge socio-material relations and engage the broader literacies necessary for such study. Part One examines how RE has been constructed as a discipline in historical and spatial terms that abstract its study from material concerns. Part Two offers some new starting points: Spinoza, Foucault and feminist theory that differently foreground context and relationality, and 'Islam' read as a discursive, located tradition rather than as 'world view'. Finally, Part Three proposes a new trajectory for research and practice in RE, with the aim of re-engaging schools, colleges and universities in a dialogue that promotes thinking and practice that – as educational - is continually in touch with the need to be critical, open-ended and ethically justifiable.
