Canada 1900-1945

Canada 1900-1945 PDF Author: Robert Bothwell
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1442657847
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 446

Book Description
Through war, depression, and social upheaval, the first half of the twentieth century was a period of unprecedented turbulence in Canada. In this lively and contentious survey, Robert Bothwell, lan Drummond, and John English explore the political and economic forces that shaped this era of change. As in their earlier work, the highly acclaimed Canada since 1945, the authors focus on the political context of events. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions. Reference and Information Services

Reference and Information Services PDF Author: Richard E. Bopp
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1598848178
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 768

Book Description
Reflecting the dramatic changes shaped by rapidly developing technologies over the past six years, this new fourth edition of Reference and Information Services takes the introduction to reference sources and services significantly beyond the content of the first three editions. In Part I, Concepts and Processes, chapters have been revised and updated to reflect new ideas and methods in the provision of reference service in an era when many users have access to the Web. In Part II, Information Sources and Their Use, discussion of each source type has been updated to encompass key resources in print and on the Web, where an increasing number of freely available sources join those purchased or licensed by libraries. A number of new authors are contributors to this new edition, bringing to their chapters their experience as teachers of reference and as practitioners in different types of libraries. Discussions of services in Part I integrate digital reference as appropriate to each topic, such as how to conduct a reference interview online using instant messaging. Boxes interspersed in the text are used to present scenarios for discussion, to highlight key concepts, or to present excerpts from important documents. Discussions of sources in Part II place more emphasis on designing effective search strategies using both print and digital resources. The chapter on selection and evaluation of sources addresses the changing nature of reference collections and how to evaluate new types of sources. Each chapter concludes with an updated list of additional readings to guide further study. A new companion website will provide links to Web-accessible readings and resources as well as additional scenarios for discussion and example search strategies to supplement those presented in the text.

Facts of Life

Facts of Life PDF Author: George Emery
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0773564241
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
Emery's central argument is that scholars must recognize the social historical character of the statistics before using them as a basis for research. He defines "social" broadly to include both an external component (the ideologies, concerns, and processes in society that influenced civil registration officials) and an internal component (the complex way officials organized civil registration, which greatly affected the statistics). Thus he treats statutes, regulations, the content of registration forms, and definition of significant terms as part of the social history of the statistics, not as technical background material. The issues treated include the incomplete registration of vital events, the influence of different definitions of "live birth" on statistics for infant deaths, the nature of statistics for death by cause, and the problem of "residence" - the difference between vital events occurring in a municipality and those involving its residents. Emery places Ontario's vital statistics in the context of the international statistics movement and the development of the province's registration system. He then provides empirical illustrations of how aspects of definition influence the data and suggests strategies for responding to such problems. The chapter providing a case study of the completeness of mortality registrations for 1869 to 1972 was prepared in collaboration with Kevin McQuillan.

Language, Schooling, and Cultural Conflict

Language, Schooling, and Cultural Conflict PDF Author: Chad Gaffield
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0773561366
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 268

Book Description
HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF Bilingualism was at the heart of controversy in Ontario politics one hundred years ago when Anglophones burned effigies of Louis Riel and Francophones hanged flaming images of John A. Macdonald. Strong public reaction to Bill 8 made bilingualism one of the most pressing issues in the 1987 provincial election campaign. Now available in paperback, Language, Schooling and Cultural Conflict recasts this central debate of Canadian history and calls into question both the theory and method of established studies in cultural conflict and ethnic identity. The book thus provides a very dramatic example of how recent research strategies can benefit our understanding of Canadian history and cultural affairs.
