On Form PDF Author: Angela Leighton

Pages : 304

Book Description
What is form? Why does form matter? In this imaginative and ambitious study, Angela Leighton assesses not only the legacy of Victorian aestheticism, and its richly resourceful keyword, 'form', but also the very nature of the literary. She shows how writers, for two centuries and more, have returned to the idea of form as something which contains the secret of art itself. She tracks the development of the word from the Romantics to contemporary poets, and offers close readings of, among others, Tennyson, Pater, Woolf, Yeats, Stevens, and Plath, to show how form has provided the single most important way of accounting for the movements of literary language itself. She investigates, for instance, the old debate of form and content, of form as music or sound-shape, as the ghostly dynamic and dynamics of a text, as well as its long association with the aestheticist principle of being 'for nothing'. In a wide-ranging and inventive argument, she suggests that form is the key to the pleasure of the literary text, and that that pleasure is part of what literary criticism itself needs to answer and convey.

Book Description
THE TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR DAILY TELEGRAPH SPORTS BOOKS OF THE YEAR LONGLISTED FOR THE WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR 2017 What is being on form? How does it relate to feeling 'in the zone'? Are these states in the lap of the gods, a matter of which side of the bed we got out of that morning? Or is there anything we can do to make their arrival more likely? In this fascinating book, former England cricket captain and psychoanalyst Mike Brearley draws on his own experiences, both on and off the field, and examines many of the elements of being in and out of form across a number of different disciplines - not only in cricket and psychoanalysis but also in finance, music, philosophy, medicine, teaching, tree surgery and drama. Perceptive and engaging, On Form is an exploration of the benefits and risks of being on form and can help us all reflect on the range of conditions that block or liberate us.

Focusing on Form in Language Instruction

Focusing on Form in Language Instruction PDF Author: Wynne Wong
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 131739447X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 41

Book Description
This module on focusing on form in language instruction provides novice and experienced instructors with pedagogical techniques to help second language learners acquire formal elements of an L2. Taking the position that the development of a linguistic representation requires input, the pedagogical interventions presented in this module – textual enhancement, structured input, and dictogloss – all work with meaning-bearing input in some way. These techniques aim to increase the likelihood that learners focus on aspects of language useful or necessary for building mental representation. The module also discusses how explicit information may play a supporting role in helping learners process input. mythos der form / the myth of form PDF Author: Emanuel Dion

Book Description
der essay "mythos der form: vom bauhaus zur autarken kunst" war bereits 1988 im ehemaligen ost-berlin, hauptstadt des einstigen östlichen staates deutscher nation, als beitrag für die mail art operation "bauhaus 1919-1989", circolo pickwick, alessandria, italien, geschrieben worden. er reflektiert den eigenen weg im bildnerischen konträr zur doktrin des sozialistischen realismus' über 20 jahre und den einfluss des bauhaus-erbes dabei.. zunächst führt es die schöne mär von einer ach so allumfassenden bauhaus-rezeption im ehemaligen ost-deutschland endgültig ad absurdum. diese rezeption war nur sehr begrenzt und in der wirkung stark begrenzend - was die geschichtsschreibung offensichtlich noch immer zu verdrängen oder gar zu verdecken sucht. sodann belegt er die unbedingte tragfähigkeit des kunstkonzeptes vom mythos der form als einheit aus geometrie und farbe gepaart mit vision, in der folge von bauhaus, de stijl und russischem konstruktivismus, von allem anderen weitgehend unabhängig: also autarke kunst - manifestiert bereits 1979. schlißlich kündet er mit dem angefügten arbeit-und-leben-an-orten-zu-zeiten von der weiterentwicklung und lebendigkeit, mithin von der aktualität dieses kunstkonzeptes / / the essay "the myth of form: from the bauhaus to the autarchic art" was written in the former east berlin, capital of the erstwhile eastern state of the german nation, as a contribution to the mail art operation "bauhaus 1919-1989" at circolo pickwick, alesandria, italy. it reflects the own path controrary to the doctrine of socialist realism and the influence of the bauhaus over 20 years. first of all, it shows up the fairytale of an oh-so-universal bauhaus reception in the former east germany as ultimately absurd. this reception was only a limited and effectively very limiting one, which historiographers seem to want to repress or indeed cover up, even today. than, tis essay, with the included figures of sculptures and pictures, documents the unconditional viability of my concept of the myth of form as an entity of geometry and color, paired with my subjective vision, in the wake of the bauhaus, de stijl, and russian constructivism but largely independent from everything else: thus autarchic art - as established in my 1079 manifesto. finaly, the appended work ans life in places at times bears witness to the further development and vitality, and thus of the currency of this artistic concept.

The Politics of Form in Greek Literature

The Politics of Form in Greek Literature PDF Author: Phiroze Vasunia
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350162647
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
The Politics of Form in Greek Literature explores the relationship between form and political life specifically in Greek textual culture. In the last generation or so, classicists (and their counterparts in other disciplines) have begun to pay greater attention to the socio-historical contexts of literary production and sought to historicize aesthetic practice. However, historicism (and in particular New Historicism) is only one mode of approaching the question of form, which is increasingly brought into dialogue with a number of other issues (e.g. gender). Bringing together contributions from a range of experts, this volume examines these and other related approaches, assessing their limitations and discussing possibilities for the future. Individual chapters discuss an array of ancient authors, including Homer, Sophocles, Euripides, Plato, Aristotle, Callimachus, and more, and sketch out the specifically Greek contribution to the debate, as well as the implications for other disciplines. What emerges from this book are new ways of thinking about form, and indeed about politics, that will be of value to scholars and students across the humanities and social sciences.

The Work of Form

The Work of Form PDF Author: Elizabeth Scott-Baumann
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191007366
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 236

Book Description
The Work of Form: Poetics and Materiality in Early Modern Culture explores the resurgent interest in literary form and aesthetics in early modern english studies. Essays by leading international scholars reflect on the legacy of historicist approaches and on calls for a renewal of formalist analysis as both a tool and as a defence of our object of study as literary critics. This collection addresses the possibilities as well as the challenges of combining these critical traditions; it tests and reflects on these through practice. It also establishes new lines of enquiry by expanding definitions of form to include the material as well as theoretical implications of the term and explores the early modern roots of these connections. The period's most famous poets such as Sidney, Spenser, Shakespeare, Jonson, and Jonson appear alongside Anne Southwell, Thomas Campion, and many anonymous poets and songwriters. The Work of Form brings together contributors from literary history, historicism, manuscript study, prosodic theory, the history of music, history of the book, as well as print and manuscript culture. It represents avowedly political historical work, alongside aesthetic and theoretical frameworks, work bridging literature and music, and cognitive poetics. In bringing together these diverse commitments, it addresses urgent questions about how we can understand and analyse literary form in a historically-rooted way, and demands rigorous discussion about the status of formal and aesthetic considerations in editing, in literary criticism, and in teaching.
