First-Century Slavery and the Interpretation of 1 Corinthians 7:21

First-Century Slavery and the Interpretation of 1 Corinthians 7:21 PDF Author: S. Scott Bartchy
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1592441955
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 211

Book Description
In Bartchy's Harvard dissertation, a thorough investigation into the character of slavery in first-century Greece serves as the basis for a rethinking of Paul's advice to slaves in 1 Corinthians 7:21. Such a rethinking also sheds light on Paul's more general concern that the Corinthian Christians find their identity in their calling as followers of Jesus rather than in their circumstances of race, gender, or socio-political status.

1 Corinthians

1 Corinthians PDF Author: J. Ayodeji Adewuya
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1532674023
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 150

Book Description
New Testament scholars have widely recognized and acknowledged the occasional nature of Paul's first canonical letter to the Corinthians. In the letter, Paul addresses real problems that were faced by real people in a real world. This commentary shows how the church in the twenty-first century mirrors the Corinthian Church in many ways. It goes further to show how the church in the present day, particularly its leaders, could benefit from how Paul addressed the situations that the church faced.

1 Corinthians 1–4

1 Corinthians 1–4 PDF Author: Oh-Young Kwon
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1498272452
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 340

Book Description
This book investigates 1 Corinthians 1-4 from a rhetorical and social perspective and explores that a divisive culture of rhetorical and paternal elitism lies behind the schisms and problems identified in the letter. This culture appears to have been shaped to some extent by the legacy of Cicero. Paul's references to "boasting" and "imitation" indicate both his subversive use, and his critique, of this Greco-Roman wisdom. In the final chapter, this analysis of wisdom traditions and their social consequences among first-century Corinthians leads to a critical reflection on similar dynamics among Korean Christians in twenty-first-century Korean-Confucian culture. In particular, Korean Protestants are encouraged to take a more positive stance towards Confucian wisdom traditions (as exemplified by T'oegye's legacy), and some insights are suggested into the ethics of imperial worship, ancestral veneration, and ethnic exclusivity.

'Hand this man over to Satan'

'Hand this man over to Satan' PDF Author: David Raymond Smith
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 0567267466
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
1 Corinthians 5:5 is a curious passage which has been variously interpreted by scholars. For some, it denotes a magical curse which is designed to cause the physical death of the sinner. Others have found such an interpretation unpersuasive. Instead, they maintain that Paul's words at verse five are to be understood as a metaphor for exclusion from the Corinthian community. So, the errant Corinthian is not to die by a curse, but is to be excluded. This work argues for the former interpretation by marshalling a range of the most recent-specialised-magical material, which has not been considered by other works in relation to 1 Corinthians 5. It fully acknowledges the weaknesses of previous magical interpretations, and metaphorical approaches to the passage. Instead, it presents a fresh magical reading of not only 1 Corinthians 5:5, but the whole of 1 Corinthians 5-within its wider context of the apostle Paul's letter to the Corinthians.
