Educating for Sustainability in a Small Island Nation

Educating for Sustainability in a Small Island Nation PDF Author: Jane Spiteri
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031231821
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
This volume problematizes the intentions of early childhood education for sustainability (ECEfS) from two new perspectives – the context of small island states and the bi-directional, intergenerational learning about the environment and sustainability that takes place in a variety of contexts, including the family home and school. It questions how belonging to a small island and the children’s home influence learning in the early years of life. In doing so, this book offers new insights and new theoretical perspectives into intergenerational environmental learning in the school, family and beyond. Informed by consideration of the most recent literature in early childhood education and sustainability, this volume also looks at how these informal learning spaces provide young children with the opportunities to enhance further learning in the field, thus portraying the fluidity of intergenerational learning from different theoretical standpoints. It provides a deep insight into ECEfS and intergenerational learning about the environment and environmental issues in early childhood education from a perspective of a small island state by adopting a children’s rights perspective. It additionally explores the relationship between early childhood theories, children’s rights and postcolonial theory.

Shaping our Digital Future

Shaping our Digital Future PDF Author: Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific
Publisher: United Nations
ISBN: 9210021576
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 88

Book Description
The COVID-19 pandemic detonated a “digital big bang” that spurred people, governments, and businesses to become “digital by default;” a sea change that generated vast digital dividends. These benefits that have not been distributed equally, however. New development gaps have emerged as digital transformation reinforces a vicious cycle of socioeconomic inequalities, within and across countries. The Asia-Pacific Digital Transformation Report 2022: Shaping our digital future report highlights that bridging digital divide and ensuring that advances in technology can benefit everyone will be a key challenge as the Asia-Pacific region seeks to achieve a more inclusive and sustainable post-pandemic recovery. The report highlighted that digital connectivity infrastructure is a critical “meta-infrastructure” for sustainable development. Three recommended pathways for action, which are not mutually exclusive and are aligned with the ESCAP Action Plan of the Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway initiative for 2022-2026.

The Development Process in Small Island States

The Development Process in Small Island States PDF Author: Douglas G. Lockhart
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134913605
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
First Published in 2004. Islands are coming under increasing environmental and social pressure, particularly as a result of the impact of tourism. In many ways, the small scale of these islands—almost enclosed systems—provides researchers with ideal cases in which to observe this process and test theory. The Development Process in Small Island States focuses on the political security, tourism, gender issues, ecosystems, landscapes and economies of island communities. It encompasses islands at very different stages in the development process, identifying valuable common lessons and providing insights into the developmental issues particular to islands. With case studies drawn from the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and the Pacific, the book examines the position of islands as ecologically and economically vulnerable places.

The Shape of Future Technology

The Shape of Future Technology PDF Author: Peter Brödner
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1447117336
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 141

Book Description
Mike Cooley One of the most remarkable features of modern industrial society, is the gap between that which technology could provide for society (its potential) and that which it actually does provide for society (its reality). We have for example, complex control systems which can guide a missile to another continent with extraordinary accuracy, yet the blind and the disabled have to stagger around our cities in very much the same way as they did in mediaeval times. There are advanced communication systems enabling messages to be sent around the world in a fraction of a second, but it now takes longer to send an ordinary letter from Washington to New York than it did in the days of the stage coach. Such a growing chasm between potential and reality, is giving rise to a thorough questioning of many of the orthodoxies in these areas and the priorities on which they are based. Similar contradictions, even if at this stage less obvious and dramatic, abound in the field of manufacturing technology. There, we find technologies which have the potential of liberating human beings from soul destroying, routine, backbreaking tasks and leave them free to engage in more creative work, but which in reality, often end up reducing the human being to a mere machine appendage, acted upon by the technology and becoming a passive, pathetic element in the productive system rather than a creative, dynamic human being.
