Book Description
Religion posits one characteristic as an absolute: faith. Compared to faith, all other social distinctions and sources of conflict are insignificant. The New Testament says: ‘We are all equal in the sight of God'. To be sure, this equality applies only to those who acknowledge God's existence. What this means is that alongside the abolition of class and nation within the community of believers, religion introduces a new fundamental distinction into the world the distinction between the right kind of believers and the wrong kind. Thus overtly or tacitly, religion brings with it the demonization of believers in other faiths. The central question that will decide the continued existence of humanity is this: How can we conceive of a type of inter-religious tolerance in which loving one's neighbor does not imply war to the death, a type of tolerance whose goal is not truth but peace? Is what we are experiencing at present a regression of monotheistic religion to a polytheism of the religious spirit under the heading of ‘a God of one's own'? In Western societies, where the autonomy of the individual has been internalized, individual human beings tend to feel increasingly at liberty to tell themselves little faith stories that fit their own lives to appoint ‘Gods of their own'. However, this God of their own is no longer the one and only God who presides over salvation by seizing control of history and empowering his followers to be intolerant and use naked force.

Your Own Jesus

Your Own Jesus PDF Author: Mark L. Hall
Publisher: Zondervan
ISBN: 031032534X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
Why are so many Christians living such empty, fruitless lives? Why is their faith so weak, their character so shallow? Perhaps it's because they have merely inherited someone else's Jesus. They've relied on what their family, friends, or pastors have told them about Jesus rather than discovering the living Lord themselves. A true storyteller and a teacher with a heart for ministry, Mark Hall traces the downward spiral caused by spiritual compromise with the World, and then charts the upward road to wholeness and health that comes when we claim our very own Jesus. When that happens, believers experience authentic fellowship with the one living God. Through fascinating personal stories, scriptural insights, and practical interactive studies, Your Own Jesus will set readers free to live without compromise with the Jesus they come to know intimately and love fully.

God on Your Own

God on Your Own PDF Author: Joseph Dispenza
Publisher: Wiley + ORM
ISBN: 1118040988
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 217

Book Description
In this spiritual self-help memoir, a former Roman Catholic monk recounts his journey away from religion toward his own personal spirituality. After spending eight years in a monastery, Joseph Dispenza walked away from his life as a monk—and the religion of his youth—in search of a different kind of spiritual path. Outside the confines of organized religion, Dispenza was able to create a spiritual life that gives direction and meaning to all he does and all he is. God on Your Own is a book for anyone who has left (or is thinking of leaving) organized religion but wants to continue on a spiritual path. Dispenza, a noted author and retreat leader, provides a spiritual road map for those who want to make the transition from conventional religion toward a richer and more satisfying direct relationship with the Source, without rules, dogmas, or doctrines. Throughout the book, Dispenza offers wise, compassionate guidance, speaking as one seeker to another. He has made this journey himself, gleaning spiritual truth from across traditions and practices.

You Are Not Your Own

You Are Not Your Own PDF Author: Alan Noble
Publisher: InterVarsity Press
ISBN: 0830847839
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 216

Book Description
The Gospel Coalition Book Awards Honorable Mention "You are your own, and you belong to yourself." This is the fundamental assumption of modern life. And if we are our own, then it's up to us to forge our own identities and to make our lives significant. But while that may sound empowering, it turns out to be a crushing responsibility—one that never actually delivers on its promise of a free and fulfilled life, but instead leaves us burned out, depressed, anxious, and alone. This phenomenon is mapped out onto the very structures of our society, and helps explain our society's underlying disorder. But the Christian gospel offers a strikingly different vision. As the Heidelberg Catechism puts it, "I am not my own, but belong with body and soul, both in life and in death, to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ." In You Are Not Your Own, Alan Noble explores how this simple truth reframes the way we understand ourselves, our families, our society, and God. Contrasting these two visions of life, he invites us past the sickness of contemporary life into a better understanding of who we are and to whom we belong.

A Religion of One's Own

A Religion of One's Own PDF Author: Thomas Moore
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 0698148592
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
The New York Times bestselling author and trusted spiritual adviser offers a follow-up to his classic Care of the Soul. Something essential is missing from modern life. Many who’ve turned away from religious institutions—and others who have lived wholly without religion—hunger for more than what contemporary secular life has to offer but are reluctant to follow organized religion’s strict and often inflexible path to spirituality. In A Religion of One’s Own, bestselling author and former monk Thomas Moore explores the myriad possibilities of creating a personal spiritual style, either inside or outside formal religion. Two decades ago, Moore’s Care of the Soul touched a chord with millions of readers yearning to integrate spirituality into their everyday lives. In A Religion of One’s Own, Moore expands on the topics he first explored shortly after leaving the monastery. He recounts the benefits of contemplative living that he learned during his twelve years as a monk but also the more original and imaginative spirituality that he later developed and embraced in his secular life. Here, he shares stories of others who are creating their own path: a former football player now on a spiritual quest with the Pueblo Indians, a friend who makes a meditative practice of floral arrangements, and a well-known classical pianist whose audiences sometimes describe having a mystical experience while listening to her performances. Moore weaves their experiences with the wisdom of philosophers, writers, and artists who have rejected materialism and infused their secular lives with transcendence. At a time when so many feel disillusioned with or detached from organized religion yet long for a way to move beyond an exclusively materialistic, rational lifestyle, A Religion of One’s Own points the way to creating an amplified inner life and a world of greater purpose, meaning, and reflection.

God-Sized Hole

God-Sized Hole PDF Author: Benjamin M. Carter
Publisher: Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 1098096428
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 67

Book Description
If you are reading this, thank you for picking it up! This book is my attempt to share what my experience has been coming to know Jesus Christ and the abundant happiness and life that surround that. The book intends to use real-life examples from my own sinful living and put them in comparison to some useful biblical truths that share the same theme—a man with a God-sized hole. The more I put into it, the bigger it got, and ultimately the consequences became dire at best. The life that I lived trying daily to seek satisfaction through alcohol, drugs, sex, money, perceived power, or popularity led down a road full of consequences, losses, heartache, and nothing to show for it but loneliness, fear, and a desperation to survive (thank God!). Once the bottom was hit, God had no place for me to go but up, and I don’t mean heaven. He helped me to live a life that is far more abundant and purposeful than I ever could have dreamed before. I was completely shortsighted, often wanting so much more but simply not able to attain or keep the feeling I wanted living in my own strength. Ultimately over the years as you will see in this book, the void grew darker and deeper. It’s a quick read, intended to keep pace and interesting. You will not find this book to be overly theological, but I have attempted to pack it with enough truth to be useful for nonbelievers and believers alike. It can be a great reminder or a large blinking warning sign, and my only hope is that you find it to have been useful in understanding the void that we all have that God intends for Himself to fill. No matter where you stand on that, I hope you enjoy the ride. It was a bit bumpy for me. Happy reading and blessings.

Bring Your Own God

Bring Your Own God PDF Author: Steve Edington
Publisher: Trafford Publishing
ISBN: 1466944471
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 140

Book Description
I loved this book! Rev. Edington writes with such great ease and holds your attention. I am not a bookworm and don't usually get tied down with a book; but it was hard for me to put down Bring Your Own God as I read about my brother Woody Guthrie's religion and his spiritual life. I read it through in one sitting. Bravo! Mary Jo Guthrie Edgmon. Shawnee, Oklahoma. Sister of Woody Guthrie. Bring Your Own God—The Spirituality of Woody Guthrie welcomes us to join Woody as he travels that ribbon of highway on his life's journey. Like Edington's classic The Beat Face of God, which details the spirituality of Jack Kerouac and other Beat Generation writers, this book opens up doors into the heart and soul of an extraordinary man who remains a voice for all people. Bring Your Own God provides us with a fresh look and deeper understanding of the enduring legacy of one of the twentieth century's iconic artists. David Amram. Mr. Amram is an acclaimed and multitalented musician, composer, and author. His many compositions include Symphonic Variations on a Song by Woody Guthrie. Woody Guthrie was and remains a creative writer against greed and against those who infl ict poverty and hardships on others. He has been and is an inspirational hero to those who fi ght poverty and pain. Through the years, Woody has been accused of many unpatriotic activities, and numerous writings have been levied against him. He has been the subject of books and articles both negative and positive about his life and about his creativity. However, until Rev. Stephen Edington became interested, very little has been written about his spiritual beliefs. This book shows why Woody was a man of love, compassion, and creativity in spite of sadness, hardships, tragedy, and other emotional blockages. Guy Logsdon. Mr. Logsdon is a noted Woody Guthrie Scholar from Tulsa, Oklahoma.
