Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Agriculture and Prices in England, Vol. 6: From the Year After the Oxford Parliamentary, 1259, to the Commencement of the Continental War, 1793; 1583 1702 The prices at which the corn rents are estimated, are the highest of the market on the rent day. To what extent the tenants, knowing this, could prevent or moderate what they might conceive to be an over high price, is a difficult thing to determine. But it was, I think, in view of this contingency that the Cambridge Colleges, and later on Winchester, had far more numerous returns of corn rents than the six-monthly Oxford esti mate. At King's College there are eleven such days, going nearly over the year, though it is rarely the case that all the tenants are punctual to date. When they are behindhand, their liabilities go into the arrears, and it becomes impossible to disintegrate them. These corn rents extend from Michaelmas to the end of August, and so cover the whole agricultural year. At S. John's the corn rents are valued six times a year, from Sept. 29 to Aug. 1. At Eton, the College began with the two days, Michaelmas and Lady Day, but in course of time had seven rent days, from Michaelmas to Midsummer. At Winchester the regular rent days were eight in the year. In some estates belonging to this College, oats formed a corn rent. I cannot but conclude that in this distribution of their corn rents, the Colleges intended to obviate a combination of farmers against them. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Agriculture and Prices in England, Vol. 2: From the Year After the Oxford Parliament (1259) To the Commencement of the Continental War (1793), Compiled Entirely From Original and Contemporaneous Records; 1259-1400 Queen's College has afforded only one set of farming accounts, those, namely, of God's House in Southampton, the bedesmen and sisters of which possessed the manor of Gussage in Dorset. The fullest of these Southampton accounts long precede the foundation of Queen's College, and belong to a time when God's House was an inde pendent corporation. New College has supplied information for the later portion of this inquiry. The archives of this society are in the very best condition, but, with one exception, give no evidence before the reign of Richard the Second. The exception is the manor of Heyford Warren in Oxfordshire. This estate was purchased by Wykeham from the Lisles.
