Book Description
Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Mine Engineering The Second Edition of "A Practical Treatise on Mine Engineering" is presented to the Public with far greater diffidence than was felt in presenting the first. The first Edition was an Abstract of a Course of Lectures delivered at the Newcastle-upon-Tyne College of Practical Science in the year 1852, in the preparation of which very little assistance of a practical character, on Mining subjects, was attainable in the English language; a ready excuse for deficiencies was, therefore, at hand; a more ready pardon for them demands a grateful acknowledgment. Sixteen years ago there were no Mining Institutes; or, perhaps, to speak more exactly, that which was first established was little more than a seed. Now, that they have taken root and flourished in the land, it may be said that the information contained in their volumes supersedes the necessity of this Second Edition; it may, however, it is thought, be fairly replied, that the present Treatise, not being intended to enter in detail into many of the matters treated of in the volumes referred to, will remain, as it was first intended to be, a Practical Book, written for the purpose, not only of instructing the beginner in the art of mining, but of aiding those who are more conversant with it, in the execution of mining work. It has frequently been the Author's gratification to hear that works have been laid out and executed in accordance with the recommendations contained in his book; and he wishes it to be understood that the instructions contained in it are intended to be such as may be safely followed with proper working results. This Edition will be found to be substantially similar to the first - that is, similar in object. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Machinery for Metalliferous Mines

Machinery for Metalliferous Mines PDF Author: E. Henry Davies
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330565780
Category : Technology & Engineering

Pages : 662

Book Description
Excerpt from Machinery for Metalliferous Mines: A Practical Treatise for Mining Engineers, Metallurgists and Managers of Mines The continued favour awarded to the mining works of my father, the late Mr. D. C. Davies, F.G.S., coupled with the recent advances and improvements in mining machinery, has created a demand for a more comprehensive and detailed description of the Machinery used in Metalliferous Mines than was permissible in the few chapters devoted to that subject in my father's work on Metalliferous Mines and Mining, the Fifth Edition of which, revised and enlarged by myself, has recently been published. The present work, therefore, is designed as a companion volume to the former, and is devoted exclusively to the description of the various machines in daily successful use in mining, both for the extraction and transport of the ore, and for its concentration and preparation for the market. It does not deal with the occurrence of mineral lodes, nor does it attempt to exhaust the list of the numberless new processes and new patents which the fertile brains of inventors are almost daily bringing before the public, only too often to attract a brief attention and never to come into practical use. Mine Drainage

Mine Drainage PDF Author: Stephen Michell
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781527760332
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 422

Book Description
Excerpt from Mine Drainage: Being a Complete Practical Treatise on Direct-Acting Underground Steam Pimping Machinery The period that has elapsed since the First edition of this work made its appearance has been characterised by considerable activity in the domain of pump design and manufacture, and by the adoption of higher ranges of steam pressure, as the succeeding pages will attest. Many of the engines in use when the work was first published have in the severe ordeal of underground work maintained their position as useful and effective pumping agents others have failed, and are now only a name in the chronicle of mine pumps. But the introduction of new types has gone on apace, and we are to-day in the presence of a bewildering variety of steam-pumping appliances. In preparing this new edition, the Author has endeavoured to give expression and consideration to these changes and develop ments in Underground Steam-pumping Machinery commensurate with their importance. He says 'underground' advisedly, as 'surface' engines are only referred to incidentally and for the purpose of comparison. Timbering and Mining

Timbering and Mining PDF Author: William H. Storms
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781332223657
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
Excerpt from Timbering and Mining: A Treatise on Practical American Methods The author of this series of papers on Practical Mining Methods and Timbering of mine workings has undertaken the task with the full knowledge that whatever may be said herein to-day, is more than likely to become ancient history within a very few years. In 1892 the writer prepared a little volume entitled Methods of Mine Timbering, which was issued in 1893 as Bulletin No. 2 in the series of publications of the State Mining Bureau of Cali formia. That little work was evidently appreciated by the mining men of the country, for the large edition was exhausted within a few months. It had the distinction of being the first mono graph on the subject, and was republished in many mining, engineering and scientific papers throughout the world, in English, French, and German, usually with full credit to both the State Mining Bureau of California, and to the author. SO great was the demand for it that in 1894 a second edition, enlarged slightly and somewhat improved, was published, and this, like the first edition, was promptly absorbed. In time the treatise, issued as a gratuitous contribution to mining literature by the State of California, found ready sale. Few Copies are seen now, as they have gone largely into private libraries. Since this work became unobtainable, there has been an almost constant demand for it, and even to-day, after a lapse of fifteen years, there are many calls for Methods of Mine Timbering. Mining

Mining PDF Author: Arnold Lupton
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331975069
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 576

Book Description
Excerpt from Mining: An Elementary Treatise on the Getting of Minerals This treatise is prepared exclusively for the use of beginners and for those who wish to teach beginners, or as a handy reference-book for busy men whose excess of knowledge and experience causes them sometimes to forget their early lessons. Still, the author must appeal to the good-natured forbearance of the reader, on account of the many shortcomings and imperfections of this little work. He has found great difficulty in compressing into the space at his disposal even the briefest reference to many subjects which have to be noticed in an elementary treatise on Practical Mining. He has also found it hard, in the midst of his practical engagements, to find time for any literary work. He would like, however, to assure the reader that he has not ventured into print without endeavouring, so far as it was possible to him by labour and study, to prepare himself for the task. In his thirty-three years' experience in practical mining, he has been officially connected with mines as consulting mining engineer, colliery manager, and surveyor in Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire, South Wales, North Wales, and Staffordshire. He has also from time to time inspected mines in Lancashire, Durham, Northumberland, Devon, Anglesea, and Scotland; and has visited many mines abroad in France, Germany, Austria, and in the United States of America. He is not only acquainted with coal-mines, but has experience of mines of clay, stone, iron, lead, zinc, copper, tin, gold, silver, and slate. For the last twenty-three years he has been responsible manager of coal-mines, and for the last eighteen years instructor and professor at the Yorkshire College. He has had charge of various sinking operations, and has made the working drawings for most kinds of plant and machinery required at a colliery; and has had to fix the price of all kinds of labour at collieries. He has also worked as a miner both at coal-getting and sinking. This has enabled him the more highly to appreciate the labours and writings of other engineers, to whose instruction he owes most of the information contained in this book.
