The Illinois Central Railroad (IC), between 1851 and 1856, built a rail line from Chicago IL, to Cairo IL. In 1876, IC entered Kentucky by purchasing the Mississippi Central Railroad that ran from East Cairo KY; via Fulton KY; to Canton, MI; and the New Orleans, Jackson & Great Northern Railroad that operated between New Orleans LA, and Canton MI. In 1896, Chesapeake Ohio & Southwestern and Ohio Valley Railroad were sold to IC. In 1896, when IC bought the Ohio Valley Railroad, that gave IC a route from Evansville IN, to Hopkinsville KY. End of track for IC in Louisville KY was Central Station, built in 1891 and served IC both as a depot and office building. In 1927 at Paducah KY, IC built their main locomotive repair and erecting shop. In 1970, IC operated some 550 miles of track in Kentucky. In 1972, IC merged with Gulf Mobile & Ohio Railroad to form Illinois Central Gulf Railroad (ICG). Then in 1998, IC was sold to Canadian National Railway (CN) and lost its identity.

The fastest way to travel long distances in the beginning of the 20th century was by railroad. Railroad companies competed to attract business and vacationing travellers by advertising in brochures and issuing postcards. The postcards included railroad logos and descriptions of Western adventures that travellers would experience by booking with a particular rail line. The Northern Pacific Railroad and Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad have provided some of the most captivating images of the unique Yellowstone National Park (YNP) hydrologic, geologic, and geothermal features. The Union Pacific Railroad built the full-scale Old Faithful Lodge at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915; the National Park Service data show the YNP attendance more than doubled in that year. Both the Union Pacific Railroad and Burlington Route provided high-quality postcards to promote their routes to visit YNP. Michigan has a rich railroad history, which began in November 1836, when the Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad initiated service between Toledo, Ohio, and Adrian, Michigan. That first Erie and Kalamazoo train consisted of stagecoach-like vehicles linked together and pulled by horses. Steam locomotive-hauled trains were still eight months in the future. As these new transportation entities grew and prospered, they put in place more elaborate station buildings in the communities they served. By the end of the 19th century, some of the larger railroad stations being built in Michigan were works of art in their own right. But whatever size and form they took, railroad stations were uniquely styled buildings, and there was generally no mistaking them for anything else. The Louisville & Nashville Railroad (L&N) was incorporated in 1850 to build a rail line from Louisville, Kentucky, south to Nashville, Tennessee. The railroad was completed in 1861 just in time for the Civil War. L&N, unlike most southern lines, thanks to providing transportation for the Federal Army during the Civil War, survived the war with money available for expansion. Thus L&N acquired a number of southern railroads that would provide the L&N with track extending south from Louisville to Pensacola, Florida; Mobile, Alabama; and New Orleans, Louisiana. L&N's Kentucky track was served by fifteen yards: Madisonville, Owensboro (Doyle), Bowling Green, Skilman, Louisville (Strawberry), Latonia, DeCoursey, Paris, Lexington, Winchester (Patio), Corbin, Ravenna, Hazard (Crawford), Loyall, and Harlan. Within the following pages we will journey over the L&N in Kentucky via postcards, but our journey routes will not always follow direct L&N train routing.

Chartered in 1834 to provide a route between New York City and Boston, the Long Island Rail Road ran from the Brooklyn waterfront through the center of Long Island to Greenport. The railroad served the agricultural market on Long Island until branches and competing lines eventually developed on the north and south shores of the island and several hundred passenger stations were built. After Penn Station was opened in 1910, the number of passengers commuting between Manhattan and Long Island began to multiply. Today, one hundred twenty-five stations serve the Long Island Rail Road. Long Island Rail Road Stations contains vintage postcards of the old Penn Station, which was demolished in the mid-1960s; the Grand Stairway at the Forest Hills Station, where Theodore Roosevelt delivered his famous unification speech on July 4, 1917; and the Amagansett station building, where Nazi spies boarded a train bound for New York City on June 13, 1942. Many of the historic stations featured in this book have been preserved by local preservation groups, while others have been replaced with modern buildings to accommodate the passengers who commute on the nation's largest commuter railroad.
