Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln Commemoration Ceremony: Report of the Joint Committee on Arrangements on the Commemoration Ceremony in Observance of the 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Abraham Lincoln 1809-1958; At a Joint Session of Congress, February 12, 1959 The Committee on Rules and Administration, to whom was referred the joint resolution (H.J. Res. 648) providing for a joint session of Congress for commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, having considered the same, report favorably thereon with an amendment and recommend that the joint resolution, as amended, do pass. This resolution would provide that the sesquicentennial of the birth of Abraham Lincoln (Thursday, February 12, 1959) be commemorated by a joint session of Congress, arrangements for which would be undertaken by a committee on arrangements composed of 4 Members of the Senate appointed by the President of the Senate and 4 Members of the House of Representatives appointed by the Speaker of the House. The committee on arrangements would plan the proceedings, issue invitations, and select a distinguished Lincoln scholar to deliver the memorial address. The amendment, occasioned by a clerical oversight, corrects the list of dignitaries who would be invited to join in the commemoration.
