Trauma and Recovery

Trauma and Recovery PDF Author: Judith Lewis Herman
Publisher: Hachette UK
ISBN: 0465098738
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 406

Book Description
In this groundbreaking book, a leading clinical psychiatrist redefines how we think about and treat victims of trauma. A "stunning achievement" that remains a "classic for our generation." (Bessel van der Kolk, M.D., author of The Body Keeps the Score). Trauma and Recovery is revered as the seminal text on understanding trauma survivors. By placing individual experience in a broader political frame, Harvard psychiatrist Judith Herman argues that psychological trauma is inseparable from its social and political context. Drawing on her own research on incest, as well as a vast literature on combat veterans and victims of political terror, she shows surprising parallels between private horrors like child abuse and public horrors like war. Hailed by the New York Times as "one of the most important psychiatry works to be published since Freud," Trauma and Recovery is essential reading for anyone who seeks to understand how we heal and are healed.

CHARLES DICKENS 200

CHARLES DICKENS 200 PDF Author: Andrew C. Rouse
Publisher: SPECHEL
ISBN: 9630894572
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines

Charles Dickens 200: Text and Beyond: a commemorative volume is the second volume in the new SPECHEL e-ditions series. It commemorates the two-hundredth anniversary of Dickens’s birth, and for the purpose brings together, in addition to ‘dyed-in-the-wool’ Dickensians, a curious variety of experts from a miscellany of areas of expertise ranging from folksinger to linguist and even magician. The chapters approach Charles Dickens from musical aspects ranging from opera to music-hall song and street ballad, from his role as a family conjuror, to psychological analyses of various of his characters and linguistic analysis of his style. He is regarded through the prism of the Irish literary scene but also through the eye of the Hungarian translator of his work, through operatic and photographic adaptations of his subject-matter. Every new chapter produces an exciting and unexpected new facet of the author, whose birth the volume celebrates.

Gendered Harm and Structural Violence in the British Asylum System

Gendered Harm and Structural Violence in the British Asylum System PDF Author: Victoria Canning
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1317520602
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 194

Book Description
Britain is often heralded as a country in which the rights and welfare of survivors of conflict and persecution are well embedded, and where the standard of living conditions for those seeking asylum is relatively high. Drawing on a decade of activism and research in the North West of England, this book contends that, on the contrary, conditions are often structurally violent. For survivors of gendered violence, harm inflicted throughout the process of seeking asylum can be intersectional and compound the impacts of previous experiences of violent continuums. The everyday threat of detention and deportation; poor housing and inadequate welfare access; and systemic cuts to domestic and sexual violence support all contribute to a temporal limbo which limits women’s personal autonomy and access to basic human rights. By reflecting on evidence from interviews, focus groups, activist participation and oral history, Gendered Harm and Structural Violence provides a unique insight into the everyday impacts of policy and practice that arguably result in the infliction of further gendered harms on survivors of violence and persecution. Of interest to students and scholars of criminology, zemiology, sociology, human rights, migration policy, state violence and gender, this book develops on and adds to the expanding literatures around immigration, crimmigration and asylum.

Image-based Sexual Abuse

Image-based Sexual Abuse PDF Author: Nicola Henry
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351135139
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 196

Book Description
This book investigates the causes and consequences of image-based sexual abuse in a digital era. Image-based sexual abuse refers to the taking or sharing of nude or sexual photographs or videos of another person without their consent. It includes a diversity of behaviours beyond that of "revenge porn", such as the secret trading of nude or sexual images online; "upskirting", "downblousing" and other "creepshots"; blackmail or "sextortion" scams; the use of artificial intelligence to construct "deepfake" pornographic videos; threats to distribute photographs and videos without consent; and the taking or sharing of sexual assault imagery. This book investigates the pervasiveness and experiences of these harms, as well as the raft of legal and non-legal measures that have been introduced to better respond to and prevent image-based sexual abuse. The book draws on groundbreaking empirical research, including surveys in three countries with over 6,000 respondents and over 100 victim-survivor and stakeholder interviews. Guided by theoretical frameworks from gender studies, sociology, criminology, law and psychology, the authors argue that image-based sexual abuse is more commonly perpetrated by men than women, and that perpetration is higher among some groups, including younger and sexuality minority men. Although the motivations of perpetrators vary, a dominant theme to emerge was that of power and control. The gendered nature of the abuse means that it is best understood as a "continuum of sexual violence" because victim-survivors often experience it as part of a broader pattern of gendered harassment, violence and abuse. Written in a clear and direct style, this book will appeal to students and scholars of criminology, sociology, law and psychology. Image-based Sexual Abuse is also an essential resource for activists, legal and policy practitioners, technology companies and victim-survivors seeking to understand the deeply complex nature of intimate-image sharing in a digital era.
