Book Description
"Adolescent sexuality and gynecologic care of young patients are topics which make most clinicians uncomfortable. This is due to a lack of knowledge and training in many circumstances. Assumptions based upon knowledge of adult gynecology alone may be hazardous for pediatric and adolescent patients. These children and young women often do not have access to specialists who are able and willing to care for their gynecologic issues at an appropriate level. The primary care setting is often the most comfortable venue for a number of these patients. The concept for this book was to provide a reference for primary care providers without highly specialized gynecology textbooks, just to focus on what providers tackle on a daily basis. The first edition was well received and the feedback was good. In the 10 years since the first edition was published, our knowledge has improved and many new methods, medications and devices were added to daily practice. Those changes prompted the Editors to provide an updated version of the book, while keeping its essence intact"--

Book Description
ABOUT THE SUBJECT MATTER Adolescence is a time of significant change. The adolescent era spans the interval between childhood and adulthood. It is a time of physical, social, and even emotional upheaval. During this relatively brief period of time not only does physical growth accelerate but, of more significance in the biology of any species, the individual attains reproductive maturity. Within this time frame, the human being acquires the capacity to procreate and perpetuate our species. From a reproductive standpoint, throughout adeolescence the individual is being prepared for perhaps what might be considered the most important function an organism has during his/her brief sojourn on earth, namely to endow successor(s) with a minute quan tity of DNA to enable continuation of its form of life. The interlude be tween childhood and adulthood is not always socially or emotionally sim ple. The anatomic and physiologic modifications that come to pass during adolescence are not necessarily paralleled by a capacity to assume the societal responsibilities associated with reproductive maturity. Although the physiologic changes normally proceed in a predetermined fashion, adaptation to a changing role is a far more trying process. Accustomed to living in a child's world, the subject of adolescent change requires considerable time and understanding to facilitate exis tence in the adult world. The early stages of sexual awareness, for ex ample, are generally extremely confusing and, as evidenced by the in ordinately high frequency of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, can be extraordinarily dangerous.

Adolescent Sexuality, An Issue of Pediatric Clinics of North America, E-Book

Adolescent Sexuality, An Issue of Pediatric Clinics of North America, E-Book PDF Author: Marianne E. Felice
Publisher: Elsevier Health Sciences
ISBN: 0323524222

Book Description
Dr. Felice has put together clinical reviews articles that cover a broad scope of clinical issues that are common among sexually active adolescent patients. Some issues addressed include: HPV Vaccine Update; Treating Dysmenorrhea/Menorrhagia; New STD Guidelines; Emergency Contraception; Talking to Parents about Teen Sexuality; and Long-acting Reversible Contraception. Most pediatricians feel poorly equipped to address these problems. They are also complicated issues that give the average pediatric clinician pause and often take more time than usually scheduled in a busy practice. By providing practical updated information on these clinical problems, pediatric practitioners can become more comfortable in dealing with these topics. Although many clinicians are not involved with adolescents in the juvenile justice system, Dr. Felice included an article on this so that pediatricians can be more educated and sensitive to the needs of these young people. An article on human trafficking of teens in included with the hope bringing awareness of this issue. Articles in this issue were selected specifically because they directly affect primary pediatric care. For example, an article is included on how to help young people avoid being victims of partner violence rather than an article on sexual abuse and rape because adolescents would be treated in the emergency room and not the pediatrician’s office.

Book Description
This book covers a broad area-the problems associated with female develop ment-from the appearance of gender abnormalities in the delivery room, through the trials of pubescence, early maturation, and precocious child bearing. Experts from many diverse fields of scholarship have contributed chapters covering a wide range of subjects. The contributors have concentrated on their areas of expertise. The broad range of this book is unique; no other textbook covers as many areas. The diversity of subjects covered will help the reader (gynecologist, pediatrician, nurse, health counselor, social worker, or psy chologist) to understand both the physical and psychological problems which beset the female, from birth to adolescence. Because of the wealth of information presented, we hope that this volume will serve as a reference source and as a basis for further in-depth studies. The editors wish to express sincere thanks for the efforts "above and beyond the call of duty" on the part of many members of our staff. A special thank you to Carrie Marcell R.N., our research nurse and University of Louisville coordinator for this project, for her time and effort in putting up with the vagaries of the editors; and to Betty Jones and Linda Grear for their fine secretarial work. Special recognition is due Sue Koenig, whose patience with us in adapting the text to our word processor made our job a great deal easier.
