Serving Library Users from Asia

Serving Library Users from Asia PDF Author: John Hickok
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 0810887312
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 752

Book Description
Asian populations are among some of the fastest growing cultural groups in the US. While books on serving other target groups in libraries have been published (e.g., disabled, Latino, seniors, etc.), few books on serving library users of Asian heritage have been written. Thus the timely need for this book. Rather than a generalized overview of Asians as a whole, this book has 24 separate chapters—each on 24 specific Asian countries/cultures of East, Southeast, and South Asia—with a wealth of resources for understanding, interacting with, outreaching to, and serving library users of each culture. Resources include cultural guides (both print and online), language helps (with sample library vocabulary), Asian booksellers, nationwide cultural groups, professional literature, and more. Resources and suggestions are given for all three types of libraries—public, school, and academic—making this book valuable for all librarians. The demographics of each Asian culture (numbers and distribution)—plus history of immigration and international student enrollment—is also featured. As a bonus, each chapter spotlights a US public, school, and academic library providing model outreach to Asian library users. Additionally, this book provides a detailed description and analysis of libraries in each of the 24 Asian countries. The history, development, facilities, conditions, technology, classification systems, and more—of public, school, and academic libraries—are all discussed, with detailed documentation. Country conditions influencing libraries and library use are also described: literacy levels, reading cultures, languages and writing systems, educational systems, and more. Based on the author’s 15 years of research and travels to Asia, this work is a must-have for all librarians.

Book Description

It is a one-stop reference guide to education and educational issues/concerns here. There are three sections: Part 1 provides a sectorial overview of how education has been organized in this country such as preschool, special needs, primary and secondary, and adult education divisions. In Part 2, contributors critically delve into issues and policies that are pertinent to understanding education here such as underachievement, leadership, language education, assessment, and meritocracy to question what Part 1 might have taken for granted. Part 3 contains the largest number of contributors because it offers a scholarly examination into specific subject histories. A Breakthrough in Vocational and Technical Education PDF Author: Song Seng Law

ISBN: 9814616435
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 308

Book Description
There has been much international effort to improve or transform Vocational and Technical Education (VTE). However, the outcomes often remain elusive. VTE continues to be largely shunned by society as a sector of education for low-achievers and academic failures. A Breakthrough in VTE: The Singapore Story shares the Singapore experience that was made possible through strategic planning, organisational excellence, innovation and ingenuity. It is a compelling story of how the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) began to transform lives and change its image over a period of fifteen years (1992–2007). This book, based on a first-hand CEO account, vividly captures the sort of leadership, policy choices, fundamental principles and capabilities in the journey of transformation. The details of the "what, when, how and why" are a valuable guide for leaders and practitioners in building quality and sustainable VTE systems which are responsive to social and economic needs. With this insightful book, Dr Law has now made it much easier for other countries to learn from and adapt Singapore's experience. This is invaluable to everyone keen on promoting economic transformation, particularly in Africa." Dr Yaw Ansu Chief Economist, African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET) and Former Director for Human Development, the Africa Region, the World Bank "Dr Law's acute analysis of the Singapore long-term education policy towards technical education goes far beyond theoretical considerations. It opens credible and practical ways all policy-makers in charge of education and of economic affairs would be well inspired to reflect upon if not to adopt. A great achievement indeed!" Dr Jean-Etienne Berset Director General University of Applied Sciences, Western Switzerland "This book is indeed a 'must' for all policy-makers and experts who wish to develop their country into a modern, competitive nation. Many countries are inspired by the German model of 'dual training' in apprenticeship. The Singapore story shows that an individually adapted institution-based training model can be just as successful. It is an alternative pathway to success — not only for a nation but also for the individual." Hartmut Mattes Minister Advisor, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports Baden-Württemberg, Germany A remarkable story of how Singapore's technical and vocational institutes once shunned by school leavers became an international award-winning system offering a pathway to skilled jobs for nearly a quarter of the country's school cohort. The 'what, when, how and why' account of what was done to achieve this result during Dr Law's tenure as the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) is both exhilarating and encouraging. I highly recommend the book to all who wish to distil lessons from Singapore's experience in technical and vocational education and training." Human Capital Formation and Economic Growth in Asia and the Pacific

Human Capital Formation and Economic Growth in Asia and the Pacific PDF Author: Wendy Dobson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135039836
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
The entire planet looks to Asian and other emerging markets to sustain growth momentum as traditional markets in the USA and Europe struggle with the slow and arduous processes of deleveraging after the global financial crisis. At the same time, there is growing recognition in Asia that the sources of growth must shift to sustain their own growth momentum in the years ahead. Heavy reliance on the region’s high savings rates and plentiful supplies of low-cost labour will have to shift towards increasing the human capital embodied in more educated and skilled labour forces capable of contributing to productivity growth and innovation as future drivers of growth. Human Capital Formation and Economic Growth in Asia and the Pacific focuses on why and how countries are making this shift. The demographic transition is shown to be a significant factor as ageing populations in Japan, South Korea and China manage declining growth in the labour force by stepping up investments in education, and by changing policies and institutions. Lessons to be learned from these experiences by more youthful populations in Southeast Asia are explored. In addition, attention is paid to the consequences of cross-border differentials in technical knowledge and the quantity and quality of human capital. Several implications for public policy and for international cooperation on human-capital issues in the Asian region are identified. The chapters in this volume are edited versions of papers presented at the 35th Pacific Trade and Development conference held in Vancouver, Canada, in June 2012. The conference goal was to better understand how governments and business in Asia and the Pacific can apply the key insight that one of the reasons economies grow is because of human-capital formation – the quality and diversity of the labour force are augmented – not just because the labour force grows in size. Students of Asia’s growth prospects will find several aspects of this volume of particular value. It includes chapters on the big-picture conceptual and measurement issues; on country experiences in meeting the imperatives of the demographic transition and investing in education and skills training; and on country experiences with attracting foreign knowledge and the supply and recruitment of skills across borders in Asia and the Pacific. Policymakers will also find useful the discussions of policy implications and the menu of issues requiring intergovernmental cooperation within the Asian region.
