SOME DISCLAIMERS It is somewhat unusual to begin a book by declaring what it is not, but the topic of police behavior is so complex that it requires the writer to state as early as possible the limits of what he has written here to describe and explain a police officer's experience. In order for the reader to get a clear idea of what areas of police behavior are to be described, it is nec essary to delineate those aspects of police behavior that are beyond the scope of this book. First of all, this book is about the psychological effects of police work on policemen: male police officers. Nearly all of the police officers with whom I have worked have been men, so my impressions and opinions are based on the experiences of male police officers. Consequently, descriptions and expla nations of the motivations, anxieties, psychological defenses, and resultant behavior of police officers must be limited to policemen. I believe that there are significant differences in the psychological effects of police work on men and women, but this book does not address this issue.

This compilation of articles on job-related stress in policing addresses the complexities of the stress syndrome among police officers and advocates the incorporation of a stress intervention and management component into police officer training programs. The volume is designed for practical use by police officers and administrators. Recommendations are given concerning the most effective ways that both the officer and the law enforcement agency can deal with these problems. This report details the research activities and validation efforts undertaken in the development of the two personnel evaluation inventories designed during this project, and outlines the instruments' operational uses. The major objective of this research program was to develop new methods for evaluating persons who apply for positions in police work and for assessing the potential of present police officers being considered for promotion. In order to accomplish this, critical features of four different police jobs were determined. These jobs were general patrol officer, investigator/detective, patrol sergeant, and intermediate command. The means by which these critical features and other information such as job performance ratings were utilized to develop and validate two personnel evaluation instruments are described in detail. The first evaluation instrument developed, which came to be called the police career index, consists of a brief, easily administered and objectively scored inventory to be used in preliminary screening of applicants and candidates for police jobs. The second procedure, the regional assessment center, consists of a series of police job simulation exercises designed to elicit behavioral indicators of a person's potential for success in various aspects of police work. Procedures for utilizing these instruments are outlined. Appendixes to this report include job performance description booklets for the four police positions, and tables showing reliability estimates for job performance ratings.
