Book Description
Excerpt from Bismarck at Home A Biographer, I think, must be endowed with many and various qualities if he is not to fail in his responsible duties. Impartiality, in the first place - that is, the absence of all preconceived feeling against the subject of one's portraiture; sincerity, too, like that of a faithful mirror, which will not make the monkey look like a saint nor the saint like the monkey. But, over and above all that, the biographer must furnish his readers with a psychological key to his hero's (I had almost said his patient's!) character. He must expound in minute detail the moral character of the man, giving a precise and accurate sketch of him which shall be as luminous as opaque bodies are when traversed by the Rontgen rays. For the deeds of a man, however celebrated, only interest us by reason of the mind and inner cause we discern in them, and by the more or less intricate way in which they show forth, indicate, reflect, the mysterious light and shade of the soul. Book Description
Excerpt from Bismarck's Pen: The Life of Heinrich Abeken Like most of the burghers of Osnabruck, Wilhelm Abeken had a large garden outside the town, in addition to the small one belonging to his house in town. Thither the family would often go and take their meals in the open air, and every expedition of this kind was a festival to Heinrich. His great-grandfather had had a picture painted in the summer - house, Jacob wrestling With the Angel; and the text beneath it, I will not let Thee go except Thou bless me, was all his life a source of strength to him, for he too wrestled from a Child, in joy and sorrow, until the end. The only large room in his father's house was the family sitting-room, Where each member brought his work, and Abeken used to say that this had been of great service to him, for it taught him to concentrate his mind on his own work, so that afterwards, both in the office and in travelling, he was able to work under the most difficult conditions. Book Description
Excerpt from Bismarck, the Man and the Statesman, Vol. 2 of 3: Being the Reflections and Reminiscences of Otto Prince Von Bismarck, Written and Dictated by Himself After His Retirement From Office After I had developed my views, Schleinitz was called upon to bring his forward. He did this by a reference to the will of Frederick William III. Thus skilfully touch ing a Chord which never failed to find a response in the mind of the Regent. He described the anxieties and dangers which threatened us from the West, from Paris, and at home, if our relations with Austria, in spite of all justifiable grounds for sensitiveness, failed to be maintained. The dangers of a combination between Russia and France, which even at that time was Openly discussed, were set forth, and the possibility of an alliance between Prussia and Russia was said to be condemned by public Opinion. It was characteristic of the Regent that, as soon as Schleinitz had spoken the last word of a fluent and evi dently carefully-prepared speech, he at once declared in a lucid statement that in accordance with the traditions of his ancestors he decided in favour of the minister von Schleinitz. This brought the discussion to a speedy conclusion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. From Metternich to Bismarck

From Metternich to Bismarck PDF Author: L. Cecil Jane
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330498873
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 326

Book Description
Excerpt from From Metternich to Bismarck: A d104book of European History; 1815-1878 In 1815 ends a period of twenty-five years during which Europe had been the theatre of almost continuous war. The influence of the French Revolution had not been confined to the country of its origin; the French people had retained the arms, assumed to defend changes 111 their form of government, in order to confer upon other nations the blessings of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. But such singleness of purpose early ceased to characterize the armies of the Republic. The traditions of the old monarchy revived and overcame the idealism of the Revolution; the historic struggle for the possession of the 'natural frontiers' was resumed, and the Rhine, Alps, and Pyrenees became the boundaries of France. Still the war continued and still its character gradually changed. The epithet 'natural' had served to reconcile the more ardent revolutionaries to the first annexations of territory, and there was plausibility in the argument that necessity justified the formation of a ring of client states to protect the frontiers. But soon all pretence of high moral justification disappeared. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
