Book Description
Excerpt from Book Review Digest The practice, inaugurated last year, of issuing the annual cumulation of the book review digest in February. Instead of in December may now be said to be established. The valuable reviews in the monthly periodicals do not, however, all appear in time to be included even under this new arrangement. Where additional criticisms of 1915 books are deemed of' sufficient importance, they will be entered in the 1916 Digest. This year has seen a change in the editorial staff. Miss Clara E. Fanning, under whose editorship the Digest has been published since 1905, left in September to take a position in the Minneapolis Public Library, and Miss Margaret Jackson, formerly with The Century Company and the New York Public Library, assumed editorial charge at that date. The descriptive notes for September were written by Justina Leavitt Wilson, who has also contributed occasional notes to other numbers during the year. The Dewey classification numbers, a new feature of the 1915 Digest, have been assigned by Miss Corinne Bacon, editor of the forthcoming Standard Catalog. Miss Bacon is one of the advisory committee appointed by the with the cordial approval of Mr. Dewey, to' make recommendations for the expansion of the Dewey classification. The Digest and the Standard Catalog will, therefore, have the benefit of the recommendations of this advisory boar d. Book Description
Excerpt from The Book Review Digest, Tenth Annual Cumulation: Book Reviews of 1914 in One Alphabet Though written from full knowledge, the author fails to expound his subject with lucidity and clearness of style. While he states fairly the scientific method of hypothesis, he makes the book too much a metaphysics of science. But because of the lack of accurate, popular books, this will be useful in libraries having a demand for such reading. Book Description
Excerpt from The Book Review Digest, Vol. 8: Eighth Annual Cumulation; Book Reviews of 1912 in One Alphabet This the eighth annual cumulation of the Book Review Digest comes to its completion with but little change in the policy that has prevailed in former annual numbers. Practically the only new feature added is that of estimating by the thousand words the cost of the volumes entered. About 2300 books have been noted during the year. The subject index introduced last year has been continued and will be found combined with a title index at the end of the volume. The increasing use of the Digest by librarians is of course gratifying to us whose business it is to make it; especially pleased have we been this year with its introduction into the Library training schools where in many cases it is now used as a means of instruction in book selection.
