Book Description
From the boundary surveys of the 1850s to the ever-expanding fences and highway networks of the twenty-first century, Border Land, Border Water examines the history of the construction projects that have shaped the region where the United States and Mexico meet. Tracing the accretion of ports of entry, boundary markers, transportation networks, fences and barriers, surveillance infrastructure, and dams and other river engineering projects, C. J. Alvarez advances a broad chronological narrative that captures the full life cycle of border building. He explains how initial groundbreaking in the nineteenth century transitioned to unbridled faith in the capacity to control the movement of people, goods, and water through the use of physical structures. By the 1960s, however, the built environment of the border began to display increasingly obvious systemic flaws. More often than not, Alvarez shows, federal agencies in both countries responded with more construction—“compensatory building” designed to mitigate unsustainable policies relating to immigration, black markets, and the natural world. Border Land, Border Water reframes our understanding of how the border has come to look and function as it does and is essential to current debates about the future of the US-Mexico divide.

Book Description
Declining access to fresh water is one of the twenty-first century's most pressing environmental and human rights challenges, yet the struggle for water is not a new cause. The 8,800-kilometer border dividing Canada and the United States contains more than 20 percent of the world's total freshwater resources, and Border Flows traces the century-long effort by Canada and the United States to manage and care for their ecologically and economically shared rivers and lakes. Ranging across the continent, from the Great Lakes to the Northwest Passage to the Salish Sea, the histories in Border Flows offer critical insights into the historical struggle to care for these vital waters. From multiple perspectives, the book reveals alternative paradigms in water history, law, and policy at scales from the local to the transnational. Students, concerned citizens, and policymakers alike will benefit from the lessons to be found along this critical international border.

Book Description
"Border Oasis tells how two very different nations developed the delta into an agricultural oasis at enormous environmental cost. Focusing on the years 1940 to 1975 - including the disastrous salinity crisis of the 1960s and 1970s - it combines Mexican, Native American, and U.S. perspectives to demonstrate that the political and diplomatic influences on the delta played as much a part in the region's transformation as did irrigation. Ward reveals how mistrust among political and economic participants has been fueled by conflict between national and local officials on both sides of the border, by Mexican nationalism, and by a mutual recognition that water is the critical ingredient for regional economic development."--University of Arizona Press website

Driven to understand the hard realities of the landscape he loves, Cantú joins the Border Patrol. He and his partners learn to track other humans under blistering sun and through frigid nights. They haul in the dead and deliver to detention those they find alive. Plagued by a growing awareness of his complicity in a dehumanizing enterprise, he abandons the Patrol for civilian life. Book Description
In his first book, Denver Michaels examined the lake monster phenomenon in the United States and Canada. In this book, Michaels takes us on a trip "South of the Border" to study the myths, legends, folklore, and eyewitness reports of water monsters in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central & South America. What parallels can be drawn between the creatures found "South of the Border" and their Canadian and American counterparts? What are we to make of the Mermaid legends of South America? Could there be dinosaurs roaming the remote reaches of the Amazon? What are "water tigers?" Is the "giant anaconda" a mythical creature, or does it actually exist? Though many creatures that were feared by native people centuries ago seem to be mythical, what are the ancient myths and legends trying to tell us? Could some of these creatures be based on something that lived in the remote past? Michaels explores these questions and many others in his work. However, some of the answers may be disturbing... ***Listed among Loren Coleman's Top 10 Cryptozoology Books of 2016*** http: //www.cryptozoonews.com/czbksof16/
