Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Boundary layer control

Book Description
While other methods of drag reduction are well-known in marine R & D and ship design environments worldwide, compliant coating drag reduction remains less well-known and poorly understood. This important book presents cutting-edge techniques and findings from research sources not generally accessible by Western researchers and engineers, aiding the application and further development of this potentially important technology. Beginning with an introduction to drag reduction that places the authors' work on elastic surfaces and combined techniques in context, the book moves on to provide a comprehensive study of drag reduction through elastic coating with both flow and material properties considered. Coverage includes: Experimental findings around coherent vortical structures (CVS) in turbulent boundary layers and methods of controlling them Static and dynamic mechanical characteristics of elastic composite coatings, as well as new techniques and devices developed for their measurement Combined methods of flow control and drag reduction, including the effect of injection of polymer solutions, elastic coatings and generated longitudinal vortical structures on hydrodynamic resistance Intended as a reference for senior engineers and researchers concerned with the drag reduction and the dynamics of turbulent boundary layer flows, Boundary Layer Flow over Elastic Surfaces provides a unique source of information on compliant surface drag reduction and the experimental techniques around it that have shown measurable and repeatable improvements over recent years. This compilation of research findings and new techniques developed for measurement will aid R & D engineers, naval architects and senior designers in their quest to achieve drag reductions that will deliver significant efficiency savings. Unique source of information on compliant surface drag reduction-an important area of technology with practical application to ships-from otherwise inaccessible research studiesUpdates the knowledge-base on boundary layer flow and surface friction reduction, critical topics in the global quest for increased ship efficiency and fuel economyReveals new techniques and devices developed for measurement and provides a comprehensive study of drag reduction through elastic coating with both flow and material properties covered.

Viscous Flows

Viscous Flows PDF Author: Ahmer Mehmood
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319554328
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 193

Book Description
This authored monograph provides a detailed discussion of the boundary layer flow due to a moving plate. The topical focus lies on the 2- and 3-dimensional case, considering axially symmetric and unsteady flows. The author derives a criterion for the self-similar and non-similar flow, and the turbulent flow due to a stretching or shrinking sheet is also discussed. The target audience primarily comprises research experts in the field of boundary layer flow, but the book will also be beneficial for graduate students.

Flow Visualization by Elastic Light Scattering in the Boundary Layer of a Supersonic Flow

Flow Visualization by Elastic Light Scattering in the Boundary Layer of a Supersonic Flow PDF Author: G. C. Herring
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1428990690
Category : Aerodynamics, Supersonic
Languages : en
Pages : 28

Book Description
We demonstrate instantaneous flow visualization of the boundary layer region of a Mach 2.5 supersonic flow over a flat plate that is interacting with an impinging shock wave. Tests were performed in the Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel (UPWT) at NASA Langley Research Center. The technique is elastic light scattering using 10-nsec laser pulses at 532 nm. We emphasize that no seed material of any kind, including water (H2O), is purposely added to the flow. The scattered light comes from a residual impurity that normally exists in the flow medium after the air drying process. Thus, the technique described here differs from the traditional vapor-screen method, which is typically accomplished by the addition of extra H2O vapor to the airflow. The flow is visualized with a series of thin two-dimensional light sheets (oriented perpendicular to the streamwise direction) that are located at several positions downstream of the leading edge of the model. This geometry allows the direct observation of the unsteady flow structure in the spanwise dimension of the model and also allows the indirect observation of the boundary layer growth in the streamwise dimension.

Elements of Transitional Boundary-Layer Flowlements

Elements of Transitional Boundary-Layer Flowlements PDF Author: Robert Edward Mayle
Publisher: Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH
ISBN: 3832545980
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 415

Book Description
Second Enhanced Edition Suitable for advanced-level courses or an independent study in fluid mechanics, this text by an expert in the field provides the basic aspects of laminar-to-turbulent flow transition in boundary layers. Logically organized into three major parts, the book covers pre- and post-transitional flow, transitional flow, and several advanced topics in periodically disturbed transitional flow. Some of the subjects covered within the book include high-frequency unsteady laminar flow, turbulent flow, natural transition, bypass transition, turbulent spot theory, turbulent spot kinematics and production, correlations for the onset and rate of transition, global and conditional averaging, transitional flow models, wakeinduced transition, multimode transition, and separated-flow transition. Containing some 202 figures (all drawn by the author), 28 tables, 12 appendices, a supplement on tensors, and an extensive bibliography, the 415 page book provides a wealth of data and information about the subject.
