Category : Religion

Book Description
This book does not go into the volumes of rules, discourses, and teachings set out in the Buddhist canon but addresses directly the essential doctrines of the Buddhist faith shared by all the different sects of Buddhism. It is essentially written for easy reading while capturing the essence of the Buddhist faith and that of Christianity. More importantly, it dicusses the major doctrine of self-denial, meditation methods, enlightenment, and the Samsara cycles, etc., came from. The book will compare the beginnings and the basic tenets of the Buddhist faith with that of Christianity. It briefly describes the basics of both faiths and the different definitions of what happiness and blessings are. It addresses fundamental doctrines of the Buddhist faith regarding the Samsara cycle, self-denial meditation, Nirvana, and hell, as compared to the Christian beliefs in salvation, resurrections, eternal life, and hell. This second edition cites from the ancient sacred Vedic Hindu texts, from whence the Buddhist's major doctrines were derived. You can compare it for yourself and draw your own conclusions. It also explores the Gautama Siddhartha's famous Path to Enlightenment with the Four Noble Truths and the Golden Rule of the Noble Eightfold Path. It delves into Buddhist meditation of chanting and mantras versus Christian meditation. The basic doctrine of Buddhism is that only man can save himself, and that is compared with the Christian doctrine of salvation and eternal life. And finally, a comparison is made between Buddha (Gautama Siddhartha) with Jesus Christ of the Bible. Theravada Buddhism does not have any gods or deities, but all the other forms of Buddhism gave common gods with the Hittite, Matanni, Hurrian, Canaanite, and Sumerian civilizations.

Philosophical Faith and the Future of Humanity

Philosophical Faith and the Future of Humanity PDF Author: Helmut Wautischer
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400722230
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 456

Book Description
Karl Jaspers, who died in 1969, had a profound impact on 20th-century theology and philosophy. His central thesis called for, among other things, a de-centering of philosophy from its Eurocentric roots and a renewal of its dialogue with other traditions, especially Asian ones. This collection of essays includes unpublished work by Jaspers himself as well as testimonies to his life and career by colleagues, associates, and translators, some of who knew Jaspers personally. Readers will also find commentary and interpretation by researchers who have explored Jaspers’ work for decades, and a biographical account of Jaspers’ student Leonard Ehrlich, who handled much of Jaspers’ English translation. The book interrogates Jaspers’ conceptions of ‘philosophical faith’, his philosophy of communication, and the prospects for world philosophy in the future. Focusing on philosophical faith, it assesses Jaspers’ interpretations of key philosophers such as Kant, Hegel, Schelling, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and Rosenzweig, as well as examining his personal relationships with Bultmann and Heidegger. Contributors also look at Jaspers’ philosophies of religion and history, his hypothesis of the ‘axial age’ (Achsenzeit), and his contributions to metaphysics, periechontology, and economics. Finally, chapters cover Jaspers’ philosophy of communication and world history. The latter are informed by a burgeoning interest in Kantian ‘Freiheitphilosophie’ that influenced Jaspers, as well as concerns over the future of humanity. These concerns in part account for Jaspers’ growing popularity in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Central/South America, and Asia. Also included are lucid clarifications of the difference between religious and philosophical faith, and the relevance of certainty, trust, and communication for a future of mankind. Trained as a psychiatrist, Jaspers practiced this profession before becoming a philosopher and thus had a keen insight into the workings of the human mind even as he challenged the philosophical establishment of his time. It is perhaps this depth to his background that adds to the contemporary relevance of his work.

Beyond Dialogue

Beyond Dialogue PDF Author: John B. Cobb
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1579101429
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 173

Book Description
Christian Reflection about other religions has often misinterpreted the truth of the other Ways. The Roman Catholic Church and the World Council of churches stress that Christians can gain an appreciative understanding of other traditions only through meaningful dialogue with believers of other faiths. This book, however, emphasizes the need for Christians to go beyond dialogue, to reach for a mutual transformation of Christianity and other religions. By way of example, the author explores with originality the Christian encounter with Mahayana Buddhism. He offer an original view of how Christianity and Buddhism can appropriately transform one another when both partners are truly respected as equal. Both contributing, both benefiting. John Cobb boldly challenges us Òto hear in an authentic way the truth which the other has to teach usÓ and to be transformed by that truth.
