On Pictures and the Words that Fail Them

On Pictures and the Words that Fail Them PDF Author: James Elkins
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521624992
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 348

Book Description
In this innovative, interdisciplinary study, James Elkins argues against the assumption that images can be adequately described in words. In his view, words must always fail because pictures possess a residue of 'meaningless' marks that cannot be apprehended as signs. On Pictures and the Words that Fail Them is a 1998 text which provides detailed, incisive critiques of fundamental notions about pictures: their allegedly semiotic structures; the 'rational' nature of realism; and the ubiquity of the figure-ground relation. Elkins then opens the concept of images to non-Western and prehistoric ideas, exploring Chinese concepts of magic, Mesopotamian practices of counting and sculpture, religious ideas about hypostasis, philosophical discussions concerning invisibility and blindness, and questions on the limits of the destruction of meaning.

Fetishes and Monuments

Fetishes and Monuments PDF Author: Roger Sansi-Roca
Publisher: Berghahn Books
ISBN: 1845457110
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
One hundred years ago in Brazil the rituals of Candomblé were feared as sorcery and persecuted as crime. Its cult objects were fearsome fetishes. Nowadays, they are Afro-Brazilian cultural works of art, objects of museum display and public monuments. Focusing on the particular histories of objects, images, spaces and persons who embodied it, this book portrays the historical journey from weapons of sorcery looted by the police, to hidden living stones, to public works of art attacked by religious fanatics that see them as images of the Devil, former sorcerers who have become artists, writers, and philosophers. Addressing this history as a journey of objectification and appropriation, the author offers a fresh, unconventional, and illuminating look at questions of syncretism, hybridity and cultural resistance in Brazil and in the Black Atlantic in general.

Robert Morris

Robert Morris PDF Author: Robert Morris
Publisher:
ISBN: 9783865211446
Category : Art, Modern
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This catalogue brings together for the first time 81 of Robert Morris's Blind Time Drawings, selected from the six series that make up the corpus of this work to which Morris has dedicated more than 30 years. The entire range is present from the early drawings of 1973 up to the Moral Drawings of 2000, with a particular emphasis on the fourth series, a group of works inspired by the writings of the philosopher Donald Davidson. Visually striking, the Blind Time Drawings, as the name implies, were executed by the artist with his eyes covered. Consisting of stark black-and-white contrasts, explosions of graphite, and obsessive markings that move organically throughout the page, the works are anything but haphazard. Morris followed a strict plan when doing the works, and his writing, which describes his process, is instrumental to understanding them. In addition, these works are placed within the context of Morris's Minimalist and Conceptualist masterpieces such as Card File (1962), Mirrored Cubes (1965) and Portland Mirrors (1977).

Tradition Matters

Tradition Matters PDF Author: Ruben George Oliven

Book Description
How do states distinguish friends from enemies, partners from competitors, and communities from outsiders? Community Under Anarchy shows how the development of common social identities among political elites can lead to deeper, more cohesive forms of cooperation than what has been previously envisioned by traditional theories of international relations. Drawing from recent advances in social theory and constructivist approaches, Bruce Cronin demonstrates how these cohesive structures evolve from a series of discrete events and processes that help to diminish the conceptual boundaries dividing societies. Community Under Anarchy supports this thesis through a new and original interpretation of the Concert of Europe, the Holy Alliance, and the political integration of Italy and Germany. In the wake of the upheavals created by the French Revolution and the revolutions of 1848, political elites helped to validate new forms of governance by creating transnational reference groups from which they could draw legitimacy. As a result, European states were able to overcome the polarizing effects of anarchy and create a concert system, a common security association, and two amalgamated security communities. The empirical cases demonstrate how socially derived identities can shape state preferences and create new roles for state leaders.

Sorcery in the Black Atlantic

Sorcery in the Black Atlantic PDF Author: Luis Nicolau Parés
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 0226645797
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
Most scholarship on sorcery and witchcraft has narrowly focused on specific times and places, particularly early modern Europe and twentieth-century Africa. And much of that research interprets sorcery as merely a remnant of premodern traditions. Boldly challenging these views, Sorcery in the Black Atlantic takes a longer historical and broader geographical perspective, contending that sorcery is best understood as an Atlantic phenomenon that has significant connections to modernity and globalization. A distinguished group of contributors here examine sorcery in Brazil, Cuba, South Africa, Cameroon, and Angola. Their insightful essays reveal the way practices and accusations of witchcraft spread throughout the Atlantic world from the age of discovery up to the present, creating an indelible link between sorcery and the rise of global capitalism. Shedding new light on a topic of perennial interest, Sorcery in the Black Atlantic will be provocative, compelling reading for historians and anthropologists working in this growing field.
