Book Description
This is a personal accounting of a young girl's childhood as she and her six siblings grew up with parents who used child abuse as a source of entertainment. In her book, Trena Cole describes the methods of intimidation and isolcation used to prevent the childen from seekigng help. It also describes how, since their extended family practiced the same type of abusive behavior, the children assumed the whole world lived this way. While these parents may have been reported as potential child abusers, they were never charged or prosecuted despite the sadistic torture they inflicted on their young children. Trena became the parental role model, nurturer and caretaker for the younger children from a very young age, never having anyone to nurture or care for her, and learned to dissociate to survive the chaos. The language is raw, ugly and harsh, just as it was screamed at the children until they were able to escape the madness. Pages from a Charred Notebook PDF Author: Tsevi Ayznman
Publisher: KTAV Publishing House, Inc.
ISBN: 9780881256772
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 284

Book Description
This book is an entrancing collection of charming, fabulous tales written in a masterly, unique style. Some of the tales are on Jewish themes: Israel, the Holocaust, and the author's eventful and troubled life as a wartime refugee from Poland and an immigrant to Israel; others are drawn from his fertile imaginings about kings and queens, monsters, and strange mystical visions of existence. In 1996, the work was awarded the Rosenfeld Prize for Yiddish Literature. The citation reads in part: His is a unique voice in Yiddish literature. He says a lot in very few words and speaks loudly with a quiet voice. He looks at both life and death with the wide-open eyes of a child. His language is rhythmical and his stories read like ballads. They seem, at first, like naive children's stories but they contain great wisdom and even greater sadness. Eisenman's truly wonderful Yiddish original has been given a superb, idiomatic translation by Barnett Zumoff, who has also published translations of works by Sholem Aleichem, Jacob Glatstein, Abraham Sutzkever, Rajzel Zychlinsky, and Chaim Lieberman.

Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis PDF Author: David Gallagher
Publisher: Rodopi
ISBN: 9042027088
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 471

Book Description
The origins of selected instances of metamorphosis in Germanic literature are traced from their roots in Ovid's Metamorphoses, grouped roughly on an 'ascending evolutionary scale' (invertebrates, birds, animals, and mermaids). Whilst a broad range of mythological, legendary, fairytale and folktale traditions have played an appreciable part, Ovid's Metamorphoses is still an important comparative analysis and reference point for nineteenth- and twentieth-century German-language narratives of transformations. Metamorphosis is most often used as an index of crisis: an existential crisis of the subject or a crisis in a society's moral, social or cultural values. Specifically selected texts for analysis include Jeremias Gotthelf's Die schwarze Spinne (1842) with the terrifying metamorphoses of Christine into a black spider, the metamorphosis of Gregor Samsa in Kafka's Die Verwandlung (1915), ambiguous metamorphoses in E. T. A. Hoffmann's Der goldne Topf (1814), Hermann Hesse's Piktors Verwandlungen (1925), Der Steppenwolf (1927) and Christoph Ransmayr's Die letzte Welt (1988). Other mythical metamorphoses are examined in texts by Bachmann, Fouqué, Fontane, Goethe, Nietzsche, Nelly Sachs, Thomas Mann and Wagner, and these and many others confirm that metamorphosis is used historically, scientifically, for religious purposes; to highlight identity, sexuality, a dream state, or for metaphoric, metonymic or allegorical reasons.

The dead are left to their solitude, their misery … neglected and forgotten. Beneath sacred grounds, cemeteries fight to keep these forgotten souls within their crumbling gates, to protect them against the sinister forces that consistently pull from the molten pits of another world. But their hold is weakening.

Andrea has long conversed with the dead, and has waited for the one who would help her on a most important quest to release these forgotten souls. She finds her partner in Darren, a recently graduated young man who is desperately searching for his calling.
