Book Description
Excerpt from Christian Sects in the Nineteenth Century, in a Series of Letters to a Lady I propose therefore to show you by extracts from the works of the principal writers among the different religious sects, how they all agree in most of the fundamental doctrines of Christianity; at the same time that I point out the evil consequences which I conceive would ensue were some of their tenets fully carried out into practice: and also to state wherein their peculiar opinions appear to me to be opposed to "the truth as it is in Christ Jesus," so far as to prevent me from adopting them; though I can fully believe that those who hold these opinions in the abstract, may, notwithstanding, be excellent practical Christians. Publisher: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
ISBN: 9780802847096

Book Description
Volume 32 in the HSRCA series chronicles the internal quarrels that have occurred in RCA history, particularly the landmark secessions that occurred in 1850, 1857, and 1882. While exploring the unity and disunity that have characterized the RCA since the Dutch immigration to the United States, this study also points out the righteous motivations that lay behind these struggles and shows how these historic quarrels have their counterpart in contemporary debates over the ordination of women and the church's acceptance of homosexuals.

Not illustrated. 1858 edition. Excerpt: ... called, in the providence of God, to the self-i denial of taking refuge, during the approaching cold season, in a southern climate. Wherever my lot may be cast, should sufficient health be granted me, I shall resume my pen, and send you some remarks on the general results of these revivals, and some reflections adapted to the present state of our churches. In the mean time may God bless, with his special presence, the instructors and students of our beloved Seminary. May his Spirit sanctify you, guide your sacred studies, and prepare you to be revival preachers, qualified to labor for Him in the nineteenth century. '. I Gentlemen, --Some general results of the revivals I have been describing, are now to be mentioned. The cases of apostasy which occur among hopeful subjects of renewing grace, always constitute an interesting topic of inquiry in narratives of revivals. In reviewing the glorious work of God, of which I have undertaken to give you some account, the fact is to be stated, to the honor of divine grace and (87) as a just testimony to the wisdom and fidelity of those who were the chief instruments in promoting this work, that the cases of apostasy were very few. The Rev. Dr. Hyde, of Lee, in...
