Book Description
Excerpt from County Churches: Cambridgeshire and the Isle of Ely IN describing the churches of Cambridgeshire and the Isle Of Ely I have endeavoured, as far as possible, to preserve a uniform plan, following the mention Of the various parts Of the church by such of its characteristics and adjuncts as I deemed material. It will doubtless be occasion ally found that from one cause or another some object Of interest has been overlooked, or others have in process Of time been in some way altered, if not destroyed. In the latter case it may not be altogether disadvantageous _to learn something of things 'as they were.' It is too much to hope that errors of description are altogether absent; I can only trust that few Of any importance will be found. Book Description
Excerpt from Ely Cathedral In 870 the Isle was ravaged by the Danes and the Church and Monastery were destroyed. William of Malmesbury states (de. Gest. Pont. Fi'. 293) that King Alfred in 878 founded a College of priests on the vacant site. Certainly in 970, King Edgar by the advice of Bp. Ethelwold of Winchester, reorganised the Ely Monastery under the Benedictine Rule, and gave back to it all the lands with which it had originally been endowed. Brihtnoth was appointed first Abbot. In 1071 the Abbey, which had espoused the cause of the Etheling Edgar, after a long defence under Hereward, surrendered to William the Conqueror. In 1083, the building of the present Cathedral was com menced by Abbot Simeon, brother of Walkelin Bishop of Winchester and a kinsman of the Conqueror, and was continued during the 12th century. Book Description
Excerpt from Architectural and Historical Notices of the Churches of Cambridgeshire The following architectural and historical sketches of some of the more interesting churches in Cambridgeshire, have been compiled from notes taken and collected by myself at various times during my residence at Cambridge. They do not, of course, pretend to give anything like V-an exhaustive history of the parishes, but all the more interesting historical facts have, I trust, been mentioned. The architectural criticisms (if such they may be called) are original, though since some of the churches were visited, restoration has, I believe, caused considerable alterations in the fabric, and incongruities of late date have been removed. It will be seen that I have not omitted noticing the late monuments or slabs of the 17th and 18th centuries, as, though these are not generally mentioned in such books as this, yet there is always some interest attached to them. A great deal of information has been obtained from the valuable Ms collections of William Cole (the antiquary of the last century) in the Library of the British Museum; and the Mss of Lysons, Layer and Blomefield, besides various printed authorities, have also been consulted.
