Book Description
Excerpt from The Practice of Medicine My object in writing this book has been to present to our profession a concise work on the theory and practice of medi cine which shall be, so far as possible, up to date. To fully accomplish this aim is a task which I had not truly estimated before the work was undertaken, else I fear in the rush of a busy practice I might have renounced the venture. To write a book requires not alone uninterrupted opportunity, but it must be done with despatch lest the subject matter be out of date before the ink of the publisher is dry. If my wish were to be gratified, I would delay the publication yet another year in order to present the subject more completely. It seems best, however, to hold to the original idea to offer this more as a con cise text-book on practice for the student and busy practician. A Compendium of the Principles and Practice of Medicine

A Compendium of the Principles and Practice of Medicine PDF Author: Stephen H. Potter
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781334681035
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 510

Book Description
Excerpt from A Compendium of the Principles and Practice of Medicine: For the Use of Students and Practitioners Long personal experience as to the wants of the busy practitioner, and the devoted student, convinces the author that a work of reference is indispensable. A compend, in a compact and tangible form containing the proper knowledge of a purely practical nature, is a desirable addition to any medical library. The active physician is often at a loss to know in what direction to look for such facts and suggestions as are here collected. Some are scattered through voluminous treatises, or in many instances are found only in the - to him - inaccessible pages of medical periodicals. The precepts and hints offered for guidance will, it is believed, supply often and urgent need. Students, in attempting to take notes, as all should, are hurried along the current of lectures, and often seize upon unimportant remarks, instead of the essential facts to be retained. Notes taken by different students often compare strangely; to them this compend will prove invaluable. The cordial endorsement of the first edition, the frequent, and urgent demand for a second one, by leading and active members of the profession - with which the author has been favored - inspire the hope that the present volume, in its revised and enlarged form, may become an indis pensable companion to students and practitioners. The Practice of Medicine

The Practice of Medicine PDF Author: James Tyson

Book Description
Excerpt from The Practice of Medicine: A Text-Book for Practitioners and Students, With Special Reference to Diagnosis and Treatment I have no apology to make for preparing this book. I have long contemplated it, and have finished it after several years' labor. It has taken some time, because it represents almost purely personal work, which has been frequently interrupted. It does not pretend to be based on my personal practice only. In these days of specialized work this would be impossible, though with most of even the rare forms of disease in every section I have had some experience. To fill in the gaps of my own knowledge I have used that of others, but have always sought to make suitable acknowledgment to the proper source, and if this has not been done in any case, it has been a matter of oversight. I had not, at the outset, expected to illustrate the work, but, as it progressed, a certain number of illustrations seemed necessary, not only to explain the text, but also, in a few instances, to render clearer the treatment described. Thus the number of charts and other drawings has grown to nearly a hundred, all of which, it is hoped, will be found useful. In expectation of the ultimate adoption of the metric system for the measuring of doses, these have been indicated throughout the book in the metric and English measures. Acknowledgment is due to Dr. Joseph P. Walsh and Mr. M. A. Morin for suggestions after reading the text, to Dr. William Schleif for material assistance in Section XV, and to my son, Dr. T. Mellor Tyson, for assistance throughout the work and especially in preparing the index. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Compendium of Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Medicine: Delivered by Professor Chapman, in the University of Pennsylvania IN presenting this work to the public, the author expects it to stand chiefly upon the merits of the great man, in whose volu minous writings it is founded. Elevated on account of extra ordinary talent and learning, at the youthful age of twenty-six, to the adjunct professorship of Obstetrics, in the University of Pennsylvania, he was, seven years afterwards, elected to the professorship of Materia Medica, and, in the thirty-sixth year of his age, was transferred to the Chair most congenial to his tastes and acquisitions - that of the Institutes and Practice of Physic, and Clinical Medicine. For many years past, with few living competitors, he has stood, confessedly, at the summit of his profession. Distinguish ed for his acquaintance with the Opinions of others, he is per haps unsurpassed for originality. Book Description
Excerpt from The Practice of Medicine: A Handbook for Practitioners and Students What is health The answer to this inquiry can scarcely be given in the form of a definition, yet it requires no medical education to suggest a picture of what health is at the typical eras of human existence, when all the various functions of the human body are performed easily, naturally, and well. The healthy individual breathes without. Difficulty, the food taken is relished and properly assimilated, the blood is forced from its centre - the heart - onwards over the body, without valvular flaw or subsequent hindrance, and the brain, with its nervous expansion undisturbed by morbid fancies, controls the movements and the thoughts of the living organism. Disease is a devia tion, to a greater or less extent, from what we thus realize, though we cannot define, as the standard Of health. It may invade one or more Of the systems we have alluded to, and it is the duty Of the physi eian to find out, by the varied appliances Of his art.
