Zwar wird der König in den Büchern Samuels auch kritisch dargestellt, in der späteren Literatur jedoch und in der Aggadah wird sein Bild immer positiver gezeichnet. Nicht nur in der Bibel, sondern auch in der rabbinischen Literatur wird David glorifiziert und verherrlicht. Die vermeintlichen Fehltritte, die in den Samuel Büchern geschildert werden, werden hier zu erklären und zu entschuldigen versucht. Auch die Herrschaft Davids ist in der jüdischen Literatur sehr wichtig gewesen. Es wird gesagt, dass nur dann eine Dynastie gelten kann, wenn der Herrscher von David abstammt. In der Liturgie gibt es sogar die Hoffnung, Davids Dynastie möge zurückkehren. David wird somit als ein großer und wichtiger König rezipiert. Nicht nur die rabbinische Literatur befasst sich ausführlich mit Thema des Königs, sondern auch Autoren in der Neuzeit griffen den Topos des König Davids immer wieder auf. Besonders im Zuge der Aufklärung wurde König David besprochen. Er bietet großen Gesprächsstoff, da er den christlichen Theologen dazu diente die "Herrschaft von Gottes Gnaden" mit ihm zu begründen. Da ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass Heinrich Heine, ein Zeitgenosse der 1848 Revolutionen und der Restauration in seinem Spätwerk auch den König David verwendet, um seine Kritik am Königtum deutlich zu machen. In dieser Arbeit soll herausgestellt werden, wie sich Heine mit dem Bibeltext auseinandersetzt und welche Schlüsse er dabei zieht.
