Book Description
From the shootings at Columbine High School to the JonBenet Ramsey murder to the sentencing of "killer kids," today's media cannot decide if children are objects of fear or in need of protection. Our culture's deep-seated ambivalence toward its young is reflected in a fascinating array of recent fiction that exposes society's collective fantasies and fears. Demon or Doll investigates the ambiguous, contradictory ways childhood has been formulated in the twentieth century and the resulting ambivalence reflected in contemporary fiction. Grounding her exploration in a discussion of traditional constructions of childhood and the influence of the Romantics, Ellen Pifer shows how Dickens translated the Romantic idyll of original innocence into poignant images of "poor children," abused or abandoned by a harsh, increasingly mechanical society. At the turn of the twentieth century, Henry James created provocative images of childhood that anticipated the contemporary, post-Freudian child. Pifer engages a diverse and distinguished body of work by a global range of authors, addressing in each chapter a novel or cluster of novels in which the child's image serves as a nexus for investigating literary and cultural issues. The theories and observations of social historians, psychologists, and cultural critics--from Philippe Ariès to Raymond Williams, Freud to Foucault--clarify the significance of the child's created image. Novels by William Golding, Doris Lessing, Milan Kundera, Toni Morrison, Salman Rushdie, and Jerzy Kosinski bring readers face to face with shattered, often grotesque images of the child. But several of postwar fiction's most experimental writers, including Vladimir Nabokov, Don DeLillo, and Ian McEwan, create texts that render surprising faith in original innocence. Whether the contemporary image of childhood appears intact or fractured, wholesome or horrifying, its many facets create a mirror in which we seek glimpses of our elusive, original selves.

Not only are such phenomena possible, they happen fairly often, with dolls being one of the most frequent targets of spirit attachment. Sometimes those spirits are benign, or at the most mischievous. Find out why the real Annabelle is much, much more frightening. * Peggy, the Internet sensation. Book Description
ADVANCED PRAISE FOR DEMONS, DOLLS, and MILKSHAKES "Pyles makes it look easy. His characters come instantly alive with the cocksure verve and swagger of rock stars. Demon, Dolls, & Milkshakes is fast, hard, smart and funny." - Daniel Knauf producer/writer/show runner NBC's DRACULA, HBO's CARNIVALE "Delightfully gory and laugh out loud funny, Demons, Dolls, & Milkshakes will keep you reading and have you reaching for a cigarette when you're done." - C Bryan Brown author of NECROMANCER "The modern and plain dialogue is oddly unsettling, slyly aligning you with the worst ideas before you realize what kind of hell-ride you got on. Pyles blends friendship and hatred, betrayal and lust with demonology, necrophilia and the biggest sigh in the world into one bloody smooth shake." - Lydia Peever author of NIGHTFACE "Demons, Dolls, & Milkshakes was an awesome read. Excellent dialogue, excellent storyline, hilarious and really well done... Now I want a pocket-sized demon of my own, which I will call Pooky." - Mandy DeGeit author of THIS ONLY HAPPENS IN THE MOVIES ___________________________________ After years of watching horror movies, Kat Dougherty has learned one true thing about the supernatural. Demons are dicks. And the biggest dick of them all just showed up at her house, trapped inside an ugly six-inch doll. If there's one thing that will piss off an unemployed, unhappy chain smoker more than anything, it's a six-inch dick running amok in her house. Maybe a little background first... Kat returns home from getting creature comforts to ride out a snow storm in Pittsburgh. She has cigarettes, a milkshake, horror movies and an ugly little doll that was given to her by a friend. As she starts her first movie, the doll comes to life and begins to make demands for a new body to occupy. Being an irrational and desensitized girl, she flatly refuses. After all, what's so scary about an ugly six inch doll? The doll, who calls itself Stitch, tells Kat of how he came to be and where he came from; a place scarier than hell itself. New Jersey The demon who would become Stitch is conjured into the doll by a confused teenaged boy named Marty. Although technically this makes Marty a demon master, he has no idea of the power he has, or the kind of evil that kind of power attracts. Soon, people start dying and other demons show up, looking for Marty's pet demon. All the while, Stitch looks for a way to transfer himself into a larger body or at least get the hell away from the kid he has to call 'Master.' As the body count rises and the demons circle ever closer, a creature that may or may not be the Almighty arrives to 'fix' everything. Which means horrible things for Stitch who finds himself stuck in the doll until he learns to be humble. An impossible task if you're a demon like Stitch. Kat, taking pity on the sad little doll thingy, decides to help Stitch; a decision they both seem to regret almost instantly as once again, demons and evil minions start showing up at Kat's house looking to destroy Stitch and anyone who might be helping him. See? Dicks. The whole supernatural lot of them. Can Kat hold herself together to get through a day filled with demons, death, violence and extreme terror? Only if there's a milkshake waiting for her at the end of it. Maybe.

Book Description
Illuminating the Dark Side’s Spirits, Fiends, Devils, and Demons. Throughout human history, we have been obsessed with the dark opposites of God and angels, light, and mercy. Whether it is our religious and sacred texts, folklore and myths of old, legends, fairy tales, novels, or the movies and television shows of today, the dark entities enthrall us, terrify us, and remind us of the dualities of life. But where did they originate? Are they real? Does every religion or region of the world include them? Exploring over two dozen religious traditions, myths, folkloric and spiritual traditions, the world of the supernatural, and the demons, the Devil, and fallen angels in today’s pop culture, Demons, the Devil, and Fallen Angels is a comprehensive resource of the many faces of the devil, his minions, ominous deities, and the darker side of nature and ourselves. From ancient demon worship to modern Satanism, the bloody era of the Inquisitions and later witch burnings to the Satanic Panic of the late-twentieth century, and secret occult societies to Hitler's involvement with demonology, this book covers it all! You'll learn about the key figures in history associated with demons and the Devil, the worshiping of the dark forces, and the lives of Aleister Crowle, John Dee, and Anton LaVey, as well as well-known figures who were alleged Satanists, some of whom may surprise you! Also featured are dozens of examples of links between demons/fallen angels and aliens, cryptids, apparitions and poltergeists, and IDEs (interdimensional entities). Were the demons of the Bible possibly ancient alien visitors? Are alien abductions and poltergeists really demons in disguise? Is Slender Man a modern day demonic entity ... or totally fake? This fascinating look at Satan, evil spirits, and their 10,000-year history has 120 photographs, drawings, and illustrations to bring the portraits of over 200 demons and fallen angels to shivering life. Demons, the Devil, and Fallen Angels also includes a helpful bibliography and an extensive index, adding to its usefulness. It is a comprehensive, clear, and objective look at a subject that fills most people with fear and dread. Yet the presence of dark angels continues to remain a part of our human experience, our popular culture, and our spiritual understandings. Come and explore the shadowy side of existence and its integral part of our nature.
