Parte de la versión anterior de la obra, el Diccionario de voces de uso actual (1994), del que se han suprimido las entradas de palabras que recoge la Academia en la última edición de su diccionario (2001). De las 5309 entradas y 8669 citas de la edición anterior, se ha pasado a más de 12000 voces con más de 21000 citas. A este resultado se ha llegado tras un atento examen realizado durante varios años de periódicos (diarios, revistas de información general, revistas de divulgación científica) españoles, de ámbito general, a la vez que, siempre que ha sido posible, se ofrecen apariciones de esas voces en la prensa americana que se puede, o podía, consultar a través de Internet. Este Nuevo diccionario de voces de uso actual constituye, pues, un valioso complemento de la obra académica porque en él figuran voces o acepciones que no podemos considerar como nuevas en la lengua, pero que no constan en el repertorio oficial, como puedan ser abatible, acojonante, basket, buque insignia, casco antiguo, cowboy, donut, emilianense, escaléxtric, inasumible, orsay, pichichi, pitagorín, rififí, y tantos otros, entre los que hay no pocos tecnicismos (como betahidroxiácido, clembuterol, encefalocele, eritromicina, etc.).
