National Capacity in Forestry Research
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309084563
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 162
Book Description
Forests are major components of the earth's natural resources and they are increasingly critical to the welfare of the U.S. economy, environment, and population. Desires to improve forest management and productivity, preserve biodiversity, maintain ecologic integrity, and provide societal services, such as recreation and tourism, necessitate a strong forestry-research base. Given the clear importance of forestry research in sustaining forests for the future, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service asked the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources of the National Academies to undertake a study of the nation's capacity in forestry research. The Committee on National Capacity in Forestry Research was appointed to carry out the study, which was conducted to review the current expertise and status of forestry research and to examine the approaches of natural resources education and forestry-research organizations to meet future needs.

Book Description
Excerpt from Forestry Research Evaluation: Current Progress, Future Directions: Proceedings of the Forestry Research Evaluation Workshop, August 20-21, 1984, St. Paul, Minnesota I am pleased to welcome each of you to this work shop. I believe that the topic of research evaluation is one that is important today, but tomorrow it's going to be critical, both to funding of research pro grams that we're all interested ih and to our ability to meet the research needs in the forestry arena. It's quite timely that we have a conference on research evaluation particularly related to forestry research. Assessment of Nontimber Forest Products in the United States Under Changing Conditions
Author: James L. Chamberlain
Publisher: Forest Service
ISBN: 9780160945885
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 280
Book Description
Nontimber forest products (NTFPs) are fundamental to the functioning of healthy forests and play vital roles in the cultures and economies of the people of the United States. However, these plants and fungi used for food, medicine, and other purposes have not been fully incorporated into management, policy, and resource valuation. This report is a forest-sectorwide assessment of the state of the knowledge regarding NTFPs science and management information for U.S. forests and rangelands (and hereafter referred to as the NTFP assessment). The NTFP assessment serves as a baseline science synthesis and provides information for managing nontimber forest resources in the United States. In addition, this NTFP assessment provides information for national-level reporting on natural capital and the ecosystem services NTFPs provide. The report also provides technical input to the 2017 National Climate Assessment (NCA) under development by the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP).
