While clear and consistent regional differences in the volunteering and charitable giving of Canadians have been documented for years, no explanations have been advanced to account for them. In this analysis we show that analysis of variations across Canada in the patterns of contributory behaviour is incomplete if it focuses solely on the formal modes of contributing; the span of regional differences narrows significantly when both formal and informal modes are considered together.
