Excerpt from Fragmenta Liturgica, Vol. 6 of 7: Documents, Illustrative of the Liturgy of the Church of England; Exhibiting the Several Emendations of It, and Substitutions for It, That Have Been Proposed From Time to Time, and Partially Adopted, Whether at Home or Abroad; Deacon's Devotions If these two principles were once put in practice, all the Ecclesiastical distractions which subsist at present, would cease; and a truly Catholic union would be restored among all Christian Churches. That I may contribute my mite towards so desirable an end, I have here ventured to present the world with what in my humble opinion will be the only means to attain it; which is what some will call a New, but which I presume to recommend to every pious Christian as the Oldest, and therefore the Best, Collection of Devotions extant in the whole Christian world. This I dare venture to say, because I have omitted no practice or ceremony that appears to he supported by antiquity, universality, and con sent; and because I have taken in all the Devotional part of the Apostolica] Constitutions, (except a few particulars foreign to the present purpose, ) at the same time that I have herein included such parts of the Common Prayer Book of the Church of England, as were necessary to complete the design. Anglican Confirmation
Author: Phillip Tovey
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317181034
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 214
Book Description
Confirmation was an important part of the life of the eighteenth-century church which consumed a significant part of the time of bishops, of clergy in their preparation of candidates, and of the candidates themselves in terms of a transition in their Christian life. Yet it has been almost entirely overlooked by scholars. This book aims to fill this void in our understanding, and offers an important contribution and correction of our understanding of the life of the church during the long eighteenth century in both Britain and North America. Tovey addresses two important historical debates: the 'pessimist/optimist' debate on the character and condition of the Church of England in the eighteenth century; and the debate on the 're-enchantment' of the eighteenth century which challenges the secular nature of society in the age of the Enlightenment. Drawing on new developments of the study of visitation returns and episcopal life and on primary research in historical records, Anglican Confirmation goes behind the traditional Tractarian interpretations to uncover the understanding and confidence of the eighteenth-century church in the rite of confirmation. The book will be of interest to eighteenth-century church historians, theologians and liturgists alike.
