Book Description
This is a true story by Martha, a Kenyan High School graduate. She was only 18 when, motivated by desire to have gainful employment, she applied and won green card to live, work and study in USA. The application was a gamble. The win was a surprise but only the beginning of many more surprises. The step by step journey from selection to landing in the United States as legal immigrant is both inspiring and informative. She exposes challenges that confront young people with great promise but limited resources. With no experience she finds herself planning, traveling, meeting and living with strangers. She credits her moral courage to her parents who brought her up in a Godly manner and exposed her to both rural and urban way of life. Dad's parting words at the airport still linger in her mind Every good gift and every perfect present comes from heaven. James 1: 17. Different views about life in America are expected from relatives and friends to anyone in similar situation. As she contemplates on the positives and negatives, she draws strength from her American host, Joakim who said, America is not an advisable destination for the lazy and unimaginative minds. A good test should be: If you can make it in Africa, you will excel in USA. He went on to say .When you come to America, work hard; enroll in classes to study and stay focused. Keep good company and avoid anyone who would lead you to engage in self destructive activities. The second part of the book is relevant information, readily available in public domain, which Martha found helpful in her settling process in America. It is helpful not only to newly landed immigrants but also those who have been in the country for many years.

Book Description
The United States has absorbed nearly 10 million immigrants in the past decade. This book examines who the new immigrants are, where they live, and who among them are gaining entry into the American middle class. Discussed are the complex factors that promote or hinder immigrant success, as well as the varying opportunities and constraints met by those living in particular regions. Extensive data are synthesized on key dimensions of immigrant achievement: income level, professional status, and rates of homeownership and political participation. Also provided is a balanced analysis of the effects of immigration on broader socioeconomic, geographic, and political trends. Examining the extent to which contemporary immigrants are realizing the American dream, this book explores crucial policy questions and challenges that face our diversifying society.

Book Description
There are many books about immigrating to the US written by lawyers and other aexpertsa that focus on the legal and technical aspects without any practical perspective. This is the first book ever written by an immigrant laying out the actual process of immigrating to the US in nine simple steps, minus legal or technical jargon. This book is much like the definition of democracy (of the people, by the people, for the people). It is the guide (of an immigrant, written by an immigrant, for the immigrant). If you have ever thought about migrating to the US or are waiting to immigrate you can benefit greatly from the practical tips offered in the book. It is also an excellent read for well-meaning Americans who care about immigration.
Author: Virginia Deane Abernethy Publisher: Transaction Publishers ISBN: 1412862302 Category : Business & Economics Languages : en Pages : 356
Book Description
The United States has gone off track, allowing domestic and foreign aid policies to be co-opted by a government—abetted by mass media—that serves special interests rather than the greater national good. Americans’ tendencies to trust, play fair, and help have been abused and require replacement by a realistic outlook. The Vanishing American Dream posits solutions to get America back on the right track. Abernethy sees population growth driven by mass immigration as a major cause of economic and cultural changes that have been detrimental to most Americans. The environment has been degraded by over-crowding and increasing demands on natural resources. Work is cheapened by explosive growth in the labor force creating a buyer’s market. One salary or wage no longer supports a family and educates children. Women working outside the home is a necessity, not a choice, for most American families. Futhermore, feminism, aimed originally at balanced gender roles, has been turned viciously against males of all ages and ultimately against females through degrading their traditional and valuable contributions. Abernethy proposes that Americans need time to regroup, untroubled by a continuing influx of foreign peoples. The family, small business, and responsive local government are centers around which a solvent and confident citizenry can prosper again.

Book Description
What is required to start a successful life in America? How does the Green Card lottery work? If you ask these questions yourself, I can give you the answers. My name is Markus Eferdinger and I was one of the lucky winners of the Diversity Visa program DV-2012. I moved from Austria to the United States in 2012 and had literally no support. I didn't have family ties to the United States, nor a job or friends living in America. The only thing I had was the dream of living in America one day. This dream didn't let me go and when I received my Green Card through the lottery, I knew, it was meant to be. For this great adventure you need to prepare wisely and think of each single step in order to start a successful life. In my book I explain how the Green Card lottery works, how to find a job and how to find a great area to start a new chapter in your life. After living for four years in North Carolina, I wanted to highlight some cultural differences and what is important to know, when you want to immigrate to the U.S. I explain the facts and my own experiences in this book. Allover, I found my American Dream and would like to see other immigrants prospering in this great country. America still offers great opportunities to people, who like to work hard and have high goals. America is the only country with a dream: The American Dream.

Book Description
In a world of border walls and obstacles to migration, a lottery where winners can gain permanent residency in the United States sounds too good to be true. Just as unlikely is the idea that the United States would make such visas available to foster diversity within a country where systemic racism endures. But in 1990, the United States Diversity Visa Lottery was created to do just that. Dreamland tells the surprising story of this unlikely government program and its role in American life as well as the global story of migration. Historian Carly Goodman takes readers from Washington, D.C., where proponents deployed a colorblind narrative about our "nation of immigrants" to secure visas for white immigrants, to the African countries where it flourished and fostered dreams of going to America. From the post office to the internet, aspiring emigrants, visa agents, and others embraced the lottery and tried their luck in a time of austerity and limits. Rising African immigration to the United States has enriched American life, created opportunities for mobility, and nourished imagined possibilities. But the promise of the American dream has been threatened by the United States' embrace of anti-immigrant policies and persistent anti-Black racism.

Book Description
For some, the American Dream is a pre-fab house in the suburbs with 2.5 kids and a two-week vacation at the end of the year. To others, it is working a push fruit cart in Oakland in order to put food on the family's table in Oaxaca. In The American Dream Harmon Leon draws upon his experiences of adopting personas and disguises to infiltrate the various institutions of everyday life, living among a diverse range of subcultures and learning first hand how they see their vision and utopia. His incursions include working as a marijuana farmer in a hippie commune in Northern California; becoming a carnie in rural Indiana; visiting a tourist attraction in Mexico (that allows people to simulate illegally crossing the border); venturing to Hollywood while trying to climb the ranks in the star-making machine; and working in the strawberries fields of California with newly arrived immigrants. The American Dream is a funny, satirical, and ultimately poignant take on what it means to be an American today.

Book Description
Behind the Green Card explodes the innumerable myths and bogeymen that obscure the reality of US immigration policy. Blinded by misguided ''national security interests, '' the United States has codified a series of unworkable and irresponsible laws which make this country weaker, poorer and less secure than ever. Through the elimination of both a huge marketplace and enormous supply of labor, the US struggles to regain economic growth while other developed nations, through sensible immigration policies, forge ahead
