Book Description
Excerpt from History of Socialism in the United States Since the first appearance of this book (October, 1903), four editions of it have been printed without any change in the text. But now, when my publishers are about to send it out into the world for the fifth time, I feel that the task of subjecting it to a thorough revision can no longer be delayed. There are several reasons why such revision should be undertaken at this time. The last six years have been years of uncommon interest and eventfulness for the socialist movement of this country, and no history of the movement can claim to be complete without at least a brief record of these events. The task of bringing the narrative down to date has made necessary the addition of an entirely new and somewhat extended chapter. An attempt has also been made in this edition to analyze the character of the American socialist movement and to forecast its probable future. When the "History of Socialism in the United States" was first written, socialism was only beginning to gain a foothold in this country, and the organized socialist movement was barely in its formative stage. The Socialist Party, which, to-day represents the bulk of all organized socialist activities in the United States, was only two years old. Its following was small, and its policy was somewhat unsettled. During the last six years, the party has almost doubled the number of its voters and trebled its enrolled membership. It has largely extended and perfected its organization, and has evolved more fixt and efficient methods of action. Since its organization in 1901, the Socialist Party has held three conventions and has passed through two national political campaigns. Its mission and place in the politics of the country have become more definitely settled. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Socialism For the study of socialism two things are essential on the part of the reader - good-will and the open mind. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working - classes, of women, and of the down - trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Book Description
Excerpt from History of American Socialisms It is certainly high time that Socialists should begin to take lessons from experience; and for this purpose, that they should chasten their confidence in flattering theories, and turn their attention to actual events. American Socialism of the Present Day (Classic Reprint)

American Socialism of the Present Day (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Jessie Wallace Hughan
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330718865
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
Excerpt from American Socialism of the Present Day In the following pages the author, Miss Hughan, makes what I venture to predict will be widely and generally recognized as a very valuable contribution to the literature of Socialism. I regard it as a privilege and a pleasure to recommend it to all those whose interest in the subject has led them to the point where they desire a handy and reliable descriptive survey of the organized Socialist movement in this country. In view of the phenomenal growth of the political Socialist movement, and the amazing progress of Socialist sentiment in the country, it Is remarkable that no such survey has hitherto existed for the guidance of the American student. Quite admirable studies of the Socialist movement in the United States have been written by foreign writers and published for European readers. Notable among such studies are those by the German writer, A. Sartorius von Waltershausen, and the Italian writer, S. Cognetti de Martils. A quarter of a century has elapsed since Prof. Richard T. Ely's well known book, "The Labor Movement in America," appeared. It Is, therefore, quite out of date, and useless as a description of the present-day movement. Professor Ely's book treated of the American labor movement in general, and not of Socialism exclusively.
