"Ruhleben internment camp was a civilian detention camp during World War I. It was located in Ruhleben, then a village 10 km (6.2 mi) to the west of Berlin, now split between the districts of Spandau and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. The camp was originally a horse racecourse ... The camp detainees included male citizens of the Allied Powers living, studying, working or on holiday in Germany at the outbreak of World War I. They also included the crews of several civilian ships stranded in German harbours or captured at sea. There were also quite a number of fishermen captured from trawlers which were sunk in the North Sea in the first days of the war - these were mainly men from Hull, Grimsby and Boston. The camp contained between 4,000 and 5,500 prisoners, most of them British."--Wikipedia.

Only one of about a hundred and fifty prisoners of war camps in Germany, but its name is probably the most widely known on this side of the North Sea, owing to its being the camp in which all British civilians of military age in the German Empire are concentrated, and to the frequency with which its affairs have engaged the attention of both Houses of Parliament in this country. I was interned there for nineteen months, from November 6, 1914, unto June 6, 1916. Previous to my internment I was imprisoned for a few days in September, 1914, solely on the ground of my being a British subject, in the Stadtvogtei Gefangnis, Berlin. On the day of my removal to Ruhleben I was again locked up for a few hours in that same jail, which served as a collecting-station, and five months later I was lodged within its walls for the third and longest period. Ruhleben was an Internment Camp in Germany for British internees, and the first part of this book contains letters from one of the prisoners (referred to as Richard Roe ) to his mother. He was an Oxford undergraduate who was in Hamburg when war broke out, He was unable to get away before the shutters descended and was interned in Ruhleben. The second part is based on the Camp journal called "In Ruhleben Camp - a little periodical of 48 pages, illustrated by Stanley Grimm, an inmate. Between them we have a most interesting account of life in the camp, which, because of the many branches of study including a laboratory, all organised by the internees, was referred to by the visiting Bishop of Bury (the only authorised visitor) as The University of Ruhleben. Illustrations include a plan of the camp and of one of the barracks as well as picturing various activities.Among the internees was Sir Timothy Eden, held there from 1914 to 1916, and this account is prefixed by a letter in which he states the case for a wholesale exchange of civilian prisoners.
