Book Description
"On the Traces of German Culture & Identity - A Plea between Kant and Potato Soup" is a book that takes the reader on a journey through the various facets of German culture. I want to share my personal observations, experiences, and reflections on the cultural diversity of Germany and impress upon my readers. In this book, I explore with you the roots of German culture and discover the significance of the German language for Germany and the world, through which we are also connected. I embark on a search for German art and our inventions and developments. I delve into the culinary delights of German cuisine and learn more about the traditions and customs that are still cherished in Germany today. The rich musical culture is also illuminated, from minnesang to modern music genres. I provide insights into the world of German art and architecture and learn with you about the significant history of Germany that has shaped the country and its people. German holidays and festivals are also examined to provide you with an understanding of the cultural celebrations. The beauty and diversity of German nature and the importance of environmental protection are also addressed, as well as the hospitality and unique lifestyle of the Germans. Finally, the book looks into the future of German culture and shows how it could continue to evolve in a globalized world. However, my intention is not only to impart knowledge but also to evoke emotions. Culture is not only intellectually graspable but also something that touches us on a deeper, emotional level. I will try to convey my own feelings and impressions that I have gathered during these mental journeys through Germany. Whether it's a moving monument, the smell of freshly baked bread in a small bakery, or the sound of a traditional folk music group – it is these small moments that make the beauty and uniqueness of German culture tangible. A journey through German culture is always a journey to ourselves. Culture shapes us and forms our identity. It is a reflection of our values, history, and dreams. By engaging with German culture, we can not only better understand the country and its people but also ourselves. However, this book is not only meant to impart knowledge but also to evoke emotions. Culture is not only intellectually graspable but also something that touches us on a deeper, emotional level. This book aims to bring you those feelings and impressions that have accumulated during these journeys through Germany. Often, it is the small moments that allow individuals to experience the beauty and uniqueness of German culture. A journey through German culture is always a journey to ourselves. Culture shapes us and forms our identity. It is a reflection of our values, history, and dreams. By engaging with German culture, we can not only better understand the country and its people but also ourselves. I want to thank you for accompanying me on this journey and hope that this book opens up new perspectives for you and inspires you to delve deeper into German culture. For only through exploring and appreciating cultures can we shape a strong and confident society. During the research for this book, I realized that German culture is a vast and complex field that cannot be captured in a few words. Yet, it is precisely this diversity that makes German culture so unique and exciting. Therefore, I wrote this book with the awareness that such an attempt inherently carries the risk of failure, as the number of cultural facets and historical events and highlights is vast. Nevertheless, I dared to do so in order to evoke personal memories and reflections in my readers or to awaken a new, informed interest. I thank you for accompanying me on this journey and possibly following my plea between Kant and potato soup. Hermann Selchow

The US Dollar and the BRICS Challenge

The US Dollar and the BRICS Challenge PDF Author: Hermann Selchow
Publisher: Hermann Selchow
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 205

Book Description
The upcoming BRICS summit is just around the corner. The five BRICS nations are reportedly planning their own gold-based reserve currency. This rumor gains traction due to several events. Firstly, the world is currently undergoing structural changes. NATO's expansion towards the east and north in Europe continues. An immediate consequence of NATO's eastward expansion is the military conflicts in Ukraine. Russia has been excluded from the SWIFT system. This exclusion means that Russian banks can no longer directly communicate with other international banks for cross-border transactions. Without access to the SWIFT network, Russia is cut off from most international payment and settlement systems. This could complicate trade with other countries and impact economic relationships. Such isolation could destabilize Russian financial markets and erode investor confidence. The exclusion from the SWIFT system is a serious measure and is to be understood as a political leverage. Thus, it's not surprising that the rumor about a potentially Yuan-backed new reserve currency is gaining momentum. Additionally, the evidently unsuccessful visit of American Secretary of State Blinken to China resulted in a sharp drop in the US dollar's value. China holds massive dollar reserves due to its trade surplus. The BRICS nations can leverage this gold to significantly reduce their reliance on the US dollar. China, furthermore, holds immense dollar reserves. If China were to sell off its substantial dollar reserves, it would have significant repercussions on the global economy and financial markets. Selling large amounts of US dollars would lead to an oversupply, reducing the dollar's value against other currencies. A depreciation of the US dollar would have far-reaching effects on the international trading community, especially countries heavily reliant on trade with the US. On the flip side, China is also dependent on the US, as a significant portion of its goods is exported there. A sudden devaluation of the US dollar could impede the competitiveness of Chinese exports, making them more expensive for US customers. This could negatively affect Chinese economic growth. The sale of dollar reserves could thus lead to losses for China if the dollar depreciates during the sale. However, the global economy is a complex network influenced by various actors and circumstances. In recent decades, the dominance of the US dollar as the world's reserve currency has played a significant role. The dollar has shaped the international trade landscape for many decades and profoundly influenced geopolitical relations. Yet, in recent years, new powers have risen, challenging the status quo. The BRICS nations - Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa - have gained increasing economic importance and are pushing for a reform of the international financial system. My book, "The US Dollar and the BRICS Challenge," aims to bring readers closer to the history of dollar dominance and the emerging BRICS nations as potential counterbalances. It should be seen as an attempt to shed light on current events in the world and help better understand ongoing upheavals and restructuring. The book delves into the backgrounds that have led to the power struggles of our time and offers insights into a possible future, analyzing the implications for the global economy. The various aspects of the topic are explored, starting from the historical events that led to the emergence of dollar dominance, all the way to the current efforts of the BRICS nations to break free from this dominance and strengthen their own positions. We will examine the roots of dollar dominance, covering key milestones from the 1944 Bretton Woods Conference to the abandonment of the gold standard in 1971. The crucial role of the United States as a superpower and its economic and political interests in maintaining dollar dominance will also be scrutinized. Another part of the book focuses on the BRICS nations and their rise as economic heavyweights. Each country is examined individually to analyze its specific economic, political, and social developments. While all five countries face different challenges and opportunities, they all strive to have their voices heard in the global economic order. Their efforts to build alternative currency and financial structures are also thoroughly examined. Furthermore, the conflicts and tensions between the US dollar and the BRICS nations are closely examined. I aim to illustrate how the United States defends its dominance in the world economy by all means and takes measures to preserve the dollar's status. Simultaneously, the BRICS nations are forming their own economic alliance and seeking ways to break free from dollar dependency. This power struggle has implications for global stability and may potentially lead to a reconfiguration of the international financial architecture. Additionally, a glimpse into the future is provided. What might the world economy look like in the next few decades? What role will the BRICS nations and the dollar play? What scenarios are conceivable, and how might they affect various actors? These questions are discussed based on current developments and trends, exploring both optimistic and pessimistic scenarios. It is important to emphasize that this book cannot provide definitive answers. The dynamics between the US dollar and the BRICS nations are complex and multifaceted, and developments are still ongoing. Instead, this book aims to encourage contemplation about the current world order and the potential changes that directly affect each and every one of us. This book offers a wealth of information, analysis, and perspectives that allow readers to form their own opinions and stimulate further discussions. This book is an invitation to engage with this topic and take a look behind the scenes of the global economy. It invites you to explore the history, present, and future of dollar dominance and the BRICS nations. It is an invitation to immerse yourself in this world with me, a world full of challenges, opportunities, and uncertain perspectives. The decisions made by these two contenders could directly impact each and every one of us - therefore, we should strive to understand them, discuss them, and potentially influence them. German-Jewish Cultural Identity from 1900 to the Aftermath of the First World War

German-Jewish Cultural Identity from 1900 to the Aftermath of the First World War PDF Author: Elisabeth Albanis
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 3110965933
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
By illustrating the quintessentially different self-perceptions of three German writers of Jewish background, all born in or around 1880 in Berlin, this book examines a range of German-Jewish identities in a socio-cultural context in Wilhelmine Germany. Moritz Goldstein (1880-1977), the conflict of his dual identity and the interplay between being a German writer and a cultural Zionist is covered first. Particular attention is given to the genesis of his essay 'Deutsch-jüdischer Parnaß' with its call for Jews to vacate their seats in German literary culture. The range of positions unfolding in the debate, following its publication in 'Der Kunstwart' in 1912, serves to illustrate the spectrum of German-Jewish self-definition at the time. In the second part, the writings of Julius Bab (1880-1955) are examined in so far as they shed light on his advocation of a synthesis of 'Deutschtum' and 'Judentum'. The far side of the spectrum of German-Jewish self-definition is represented by Ernst Lissauer (1882-1937), who propagated complete assimilation, considering the Jewish element as an obstacle which had to be overcome on the road to 'Deutschtum'. This study depicts how external cultural and political influences shaped the transformation of their ideas of what it meant to be Jewish in Germany and how they responded to increasing anti-Semitism. By recognising the way in which the individual's cultural identity was constantly refashioned in the face of external challenges, a fuller understanding of the evolving self-perception of German Jews is reached.

(Un)Following in Winnetou’s Footsteps PDF Author: Sanja Runtić
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9819974216
Category : Literary Criticism

Pages : 276

Book Description
This book examines the ways in which North American Indigenous identity has been (re)imagined, represented, and negotiated in German, Croatian, Italian, Polish, and Czech culture. Employing a cross-disciplinary and comparative approach and drawing on a range of media—from literature, comics, and film to photography, painting, and the performative arts—across different historical and cultural backgrounds, it aims to both contribute innovative scholarship on Indigenous studies in Europe and open a new avenue in the field by focusing on Central European settings that have received little or no critical attention to date. The book’s novelty also comes from its focus on the latest developments in the field, including the “Ravensburger/Winnetou controversy,” which swept across Europe in 2022, echoing the 2017 Canadian debate over Indigenous appropriation and free speech. It seeks to provide a sound reference and lay the groundwork for future scholarship by opening up a conversation on how Indigenous identities have been portrayed in Central European literature and media texts. To this end, it not only addresses generalized expectations about North American Indigenous people underlying (Central) European public discourse and imagination but also questions whether and to what extent some of the ingrained stereotypical views and practices, such as hobbyism, have been challenged in the face of Indigenous resurgence, rapidly changing media and information-sharing realities, and global cultural shifts. The closing interview with Métis playwright, actor, and director Bruce Sinclair underscores one of the book’s key goals—to spark an informed cross-cultural dialogue that will reveal the mechanisms of, as well as the contradictions and tensions inherent in, the politics of Indigenous representation in (Central) European cultural industries and encourage (Central) Europeans to confront their own cultural assumptions and attitudes.

Beyond Alterity

Beyond Alterity PDF Author: Qinna Shen
Publisher: Berghahn Books
ISBN: 1782383611
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 316

Book Description
With the economic and political rise of East Asia in the second half of the twentieth century, many Western countries have re-evaluated their links to their Eastern counterparts. Thus, in recent years, Asian German Studies has emerged as a promising branch within interdisciplinary German Studies. This collection of essays examines German-language cultural production pertaining to modern China and Japan, and explicitly challenges orientalist notions by proposing a conception of East and West not as opposites, but as complementary elements of global culture, thereby urging a move beyond national paradigms in cultural studies. Essays focus on the mid-century German-Japanese alliance, Chinese-German Leftist collaborations, global capitalism, travel, identity, and cultural hybridity. The authors include historians and scholars of film and literature, and employ a wide array of approaches from postcolonial, globalization, media, and gender studies. The collection sheds new light on a complex and ambivalentset of international relationships, while also testifying to the potential of Asian German Studies.

White Rebels in Black

White Rebels in Black PDF Author: Priscilla D Layne
Publisher: University of Michigan Press
ISBN: 0472123831
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
Analyzing literary texts and films, White Rebels in Black shows how German authors have since the 1950s appropriated black popular culture, particularly music, to distance themselves from the legacy of Nazi Germany, authoritarianism, and racism, and how such appropriation changes over time. Priscilla Layne offers a critique of how blackness came to symbolize a positive escape from the hegemonic masculinity of postwar Germany, and how black identities have been represented as separate from, and in opposition to, German identity, foreclosing the possibility of being both black and German. Citing four autobiographies published by black German authors Hans Jürgen Massaquo, Theodor Michael, Günter Kaufmann, and Charly Graf, Layne considers how black German men have related to hegemonic masculinity since Nazi Germany, and concludes with a discussion on the work of black German poet, Philipp Khabo Köpsell.
