The Principles of Insect Physiology

Book Description
INSECTS PROVIDE an ideal medium in which to study all the problems of physiology. But if this medium is to be used to the best advantage, the principles and peculiarities of the insect's organization must be first appreciated. It is the purpose of this book to set forth these principles so far as they are understood at the present day. There exist already many excellent text-books of general ento mology; notably those of Imms, Weber, and Snodgrass, to mention only the more recent. But these authors have necessarily been preoccupied chiefly with describing the diversity of form among insects; discussions on function being correspondingly condensed. In the present work the emphasis is reversed. Struc ture is described only to an extent sufficient to make the physiological argument intelligible. Every anatomical peculiarity, every ecological specialization, has indeed its physiological counterpart. In that sense, anatomy, physiology and ecology are not separable. But regarded from the standpoint from which the present work is written, the endless modifications that are met with among insects are but illustrations of the general principles of their physiology, which it is the aim of this book to set forth. Completeness in such a work is not possible, or desirable; but an endeavour has been made to illustrate each physiological characteristic by a few concrete examples, and to include sufficient references to guide the student to the more important sources. The physiology of insects is to some the handmaid of Economic Entomology.

Advances in Insect Physiology

Advances in Insect Physiology PDF Author:
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0128203684
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
Advances in Insect Physiology, Volume 59, examines the molecular and developmental origins of insect extended phenotypes, their diverse physiological functions, their consequences for the ecology and evolution of insects, and their biotic partners. Chapters cover recent ideas about the significance and roles of extended phenotypes and provide overviews of the latest advances. Written for a broad audience of researchers and students, the book's chapters establish extended phenotypes as focal structures for understanding genotype-to-phenotype maps, the origins and consequences of complex traits among multiple interacting partners, and the roles they may play in providing resilience against climate change. Compiles and synthesizes the latest advances in understanding extended phenotypes Provides detailed information on molecular and cellular mechanisms underpinning formation and control of extended phenotypes Gives comprehensive implications of extended phenotypes for ecology, evolution and applied systems

Book Description
Drawing on expertise from around the world, this volume identifies our current state of knowledge about the behavior and physiology of root herbivores. In particular, this work describes prevailing concepts and theories based on historical and current literature and identifies what new technologies and approaches are available to researchers in the field. Chapters address how root herbivore behavior and physiology is affected by the biotic and abiotic soil environment, cover case studies of globally significant pests and discuss advances in molecular techniques. Covering all aspects of behavioral and physiological responses of root herbivores to their environment, this will be valuable reading for researchers and professionals in agricultural entomology, plant science, ecology and soil science. Key topics include: Molecular approach to root herbivores, Phylloxera, Plant metabolites, Soil climate, Behavioral ecology / wireworms

Insect Sounds and Communication

Insect Sounds and Communication PDF Author: Sakis Drosopoulos
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1420039334
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 552

Book Description
While we may have always assumed that insects employ auditory communication, our understanding of it has been impeded by various technical challenges. In comparison to the study of an insect's visual and olfactory expression, research in the area of acoustic communication has lagged behind. Filling this void, Insect Sounds and Communication is the first multi-author volume to present a comprehensive portrait on this elusive subject. The text includes 32 chapters written by top experts from all corners of the globe. Divided into two major sections, this groundbreaking text starts with a general introduction to insect sounds and communication that leads into a discussion of the technical aspects of recording and analyzing sounds. It then considers the functioning of the sense organs and sensory systems involved in acoustic behavior, and goes on to investigate the impact that variables such as body size and temperature have on insect sounds and vibrations. Several chapters are devoted to various evolutionary and ecological aspects of insect communication, and include rare information on seldom-studied groups, including Neuropterida and Plecoptera. The second section of the book includes chapters on communication and song repertoires of a wide diversity of insects, including Heteroptera, Auchenorrhyncha, Psylloidea, Diptera, Coleoptera, and Hymenoptera . Insect Sounds and Communication is packaged with a DVD, which holds sound and video recordings of many of the insects discussed throughout the text, as well as many full color illustrations not included in the printed text. The DVD also features an unabridged discussion in French of the contribution of the famous French cicadologist, Michel Boulard.

The Physiology of Insect Reproduction

The Physiology of Insect Reproduction PDF Author: Franz Engelmann
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483186539
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
The Physiology of Insect Reproduction provides a comprehensive coverage of insect reproductive system. The title details basic phenomena governing reproductive processes in insects, with the whole spectrum of an insect reproductive cycle. The text first covers insect genitalia, and proceeds to discussing sex determination. Next, the selection talks about the development of unfertilized eggs in insects. The text also deals with gonadal development, along with insect mating behavior. Chapter 7 details the factors that affect egg production and fecundity, while Chapter 8 tackles hormonal control of egg maturation. The ninth chapter covers endocrine influence on reproduction in the male insect. The next chapters discuss oviposition, heterogony, and viviparity. The last two chapters deal with functional hermaphroditism and insect societies, respectively. The book will be of great use to students and researchers in the field of entomology.
