This book provides an overview of affective individual variables that are considered relevant for second language learning and outlines a novel approach to researching them. In the first part of the book, the most prominent concepts and theories in connection with affective individual variables and tasks are discussed, followed by a literature review of the most significant empirical studies conducted on the reviewed individual variables with the help of tasks. The second part of the monograph reports the findings of a research project which investigated the relationships of motivation, emotions, flow experiences, and self-efficacy beliefs of secondary school students studying English in Hungary. These constructs are examined at two levels: in connection with learners’ English classes in general and in connection with a particular language task, thus linking task performance measures to specific affective states experienced while performing a task and their general trait versions reported in connection with the language classes. Teacher interviews provide further insights into the language tasks used by the teachers of the students taking part in the study and their affective correlates. The history of methods of observation illustrates a gradual development from lay observation to systematic scientific observation. Over the past centuries, observing scientists have learned to take advantage of various research tools. Just as natural scientists came to appreciate the aid of the microscope to observe very small objects and telescopes to observe very distant objects, we have come to see video technology as a tool for social scientists to observe phenomena that are too complex to be studied by the naked eye. The investigative potential of such video studies lies in the fact that complex phenomena and events captured on video are available for analysis that can focus ex-post facto on various aspects of the material under investigation. Video study is a complex methodological approach, which enables the employing of various strategies, methods or techniques for generating, collecting and analysing video data, i.e. audiovisual data grounded in rich situational contexts. The vast majority of research on language in ASD has focused on pragmatic difficulties, while less is known about structural aspects of language in this population. Work on syntax and phonology is not only sparse, but the heterogeneity in these grammatical domains has moreover led to conflicting reports that they are either intact or impaired. More remains to be understood about variations in grammatical profiles in ASD, as well as the relation of grammar to other cognitive abilities. The body of research gathered here increases our understanding of the grammatical strengths and weaknesses in ASD. The contributions carefully elucidate the relations between grammar and other areas of cognition, as well as unveil the similarities and differences of grammar in ASD compared to other conditions.
