Book Description
This book examines the environmental, political, and economic history of Ireland's marine fisheries from 1400 to 1600. It combines a wide range of historical sources with innovative digital research methods to provide a comprehensive and systematic overview. Government letters and court documents highlight the diverse range of fishing fleets from across Europe that visited Irish waters in the early sixteenth century, bringing wealth and cultural influence to the native Irish, who developed complex systems to protect and tax the visitors. Furthermore, trade records illustrate that fish was Ireland's premier export in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. However, a range of factors led to the industry's collapse by the end of the sixteenth century: the Tudor conquest which disrupted fishing operations and fundamentally altered who controlled fishing resources; the destabilization of Irish waters resulting from the terrestrial conflict, which allowed pirates to thrive; an influx of cheap cod from the newly exploited fisheries in Newfoundland which changed consumption patterns in Ireland and across Europe; and shifting climatic conditions and decades of over-exploitation which meant fewer fish and poorer catches. Overall, the book reveals that fisheries form a vital part of the broader environmental, political, and economic history of Ireland.

Book Description
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1848 edition. Excerpt: ... THE DEEP SEA AND COAST FISHERIES OF IRELAND. CHAPTER I. FORMATION OF FISHING COMPANIES--STATIONS--CLASS OF VESSELS, Ac, &c. I think it may be useful for the information of parties embarking either in a Company or as a private speculation (as the field is wide) to publish in this work an account of the Fishery Bounties of Ireland, extending from the 5th of January 1827, to the 5th of April 1830, for the encouragement and improvement of the Irish Fisheries; their regulations were clear and practicable, but if they can be impr oved upon so much the better; my object is to impress the fact strongly upon the minds of the managers of a speculation, that they are not entering upon an El Dorado lately discovered. As such is not the case, this being a speculation that has often failed in good hands. I attribute those failures to the following causes. First, the inadequate vessels with which the Fisheries were attempted during the stormy winter season, at which time the fish are in the larges t shoals, along the wild shores of the Atlantic. Secondly, when the weather permitted the smaller boats to venture out, although their take of fish might be very great, still their arduous labour was unrequited, as the local demand was in all cases very limited. I think my suggestions greatly overcome these difficulties. And as they have paid the Skerries men who worked upon them on a limited scale, I am perfectly satisfied that on an extended and matured system the returns would be incredible. The returns of the different Fishing Stations will depend on the Besident Director, who should be a person of intelligence, and from his station in life, of influence; for if this situation is filled by any second-rate person he will have no control over either the...
