Anaphora Resolution

Anaphora Resolution PDF Author: Massimo Poesio
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3662479095
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 508

Book Description
This book lays out a path leading from the linguistic and cognitive basics, to classical rule-based and machine learning algorithms, to today’s state-of-the-art approaches, which use advanced empirically grounded techniques, automatic knowledge acquisition, and refined linguistic modeling to make a real difference in real-world applications. Anaphora and coreference resolution both refer to the process of linking textual phrases (and, consequently, the information attached to them) within as well as across sentence boundaries, and to the same discourse referent. The book offers an overview of recent research advances, focusing on practical, operational approaches and their applications. In part I (Background), it provides a general introduction, which succinctly summarizes the linguistic, cognitive, and computational foundations of anaphora processing and the key classical rule- and machine-learning-based anaphora resolution algorithms. Acknowledging the central importance of shared resources, part II (Resources) covers annotated corpora, formal evaluation, preprocessing technology, and off-the-shelf anaphora resolution systems. Part III (Algorithms) provides a thorough description of state-of-the-art anaphora resolution algorithms, covering enhanced machine learning methods as well as techniques for accomplishing important subtasks such as mention detection and acquisition of relevant knowledge. Part IV (Applications) deals with a selection of important anaphora and coreference resolution applications, discussing particular scenarios in diverse domains and distilling a best-practice model for systematically approaching new application cases. In the concluding part V (Outlook), based on a survey conducted among the contributing authors, the prospects of the research field of anaphora processing are discussed, and promising new areas of interdisciplinary cooperation and emerging application scenarios are identified. Given the book’s design, it can be used both as an accompanying text for advanced lectures in computational linguistics, natural language engineering, and computer science, and as a reference work for research and independent study. It addresses an audience that includes academic researchers, university lecturers, postgraduate students, advanced undergraduate students, industrial researchers, and software engineers.

Advances in Artificial Intelligence

Advances in Artificial Intelligence PDF Author: Eleni Stroulia
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540451536
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 372

Book Description
AI 2001 is the 14th in the series of Arti cial Intelligence conferences sponsored by the Canadian Society for Computational Studies of Intelligence/Soci et e - nadienne pour l’ etude de l’intelligence par ordinateur. As was the case last year too, the conference is being held in conjunction with the annual conferences of two other Canadian societies, Graphics Interface (GI 2001) and Vision Int- face (VI 2001). We believe that the overall experience will be enriched by this conjunction of conferences. This year is the \silver anniversary" of the conference: the rst Canadian AI conference was held in 1976 at UBC. During its lifetime, it has attracted Canadian and international papers of high quality from a variety of AI research areas. All papers submitted to the conference received at least three indep- dent reviews. Approximately one third were accepted for plenary presentation at the conference. The best paper of the conference will be invited to appear in Computational Intelligence.

Natural Language Information Retrieval

Natural Language Information Retrieval PDF Author: T. Strzalkowski
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401723885
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 407

Book Description
The last decade has been one of dramatic progress in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). This hitherto largely academic discipline has found itself at the center of an information revolution ushered in by the Internet age, as demand for human-computer communication and informa tion access has exploded. Emerging applications in computer-assisted infor mation production and dissemination, automated understanding of news, understanding of spoken language, and processing of foreign languages have given impetus to research that resulted in a new generation of robust tools, systems, and commercial products. Well-positioned government research funding, particularly in the U. S. , has helped to advance the state-of-the art at an unprecedented pace, in no small measure thanks to the rigorous 1 evaluations. This volume focuses on the use of Natural Language Processing in In formation Retrieval (IR), an area of science and technology that deals with cataloging, categorization, classification, and search of large amounts of information, particularly in textual form. An outcome of an information retrieval process is usually a set of documents containing information on a given topic, and may consist of newspaper-like articles, memos, reports of any kind, entire books, as well as annotated image and sound files. Since we assume that the information is primarily encoded as text, IR is also a natural language processing problem: in order to decide if a document is relevant to a given information need, one needs to be able to understand its content.

Information Extraction: A Multidisciplinary Approach to an Emerging Information Technology

Information Extraction: A Multidisciplinary Approach to an Emerging Information Technology PDF Author: Maria T. Pazienza
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540695486
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 223

Book Description
Information extraction (IE) is a new technology enabling relevant content to be extracted from textual information available electronically. IE essentially builds on natural language processing and computational linguistics, but it is also closely related to the well established area of information retrieval and involves learning. In concert with other promising and emerging information engineering technologies like data mining, intelligent data analysis, and text summarization, IE will play a crucial role for scientists and professionals as well as other end-users who have to deal with vast amounts of information, for example from the Internet. As the first book solely devoted to IE, it is of relevance to anybody interested in new and emerging trends in information processing technology.

Structure Design and Degradation Mechanisms in Coastal Environments PDF Author: Abdelkarim Ait-Mokhtar
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1848217323
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 369

Book Description
This book provide a series of designs, materials, characterization and modeling, that will help create safer and stronger structures in coastal areas. The authors take a look at the different materials (porous, heterogeneous, concrete...), the moisture transfers in construction materials as well as the degradation caused by external attacks and put forth systems to monitor the structures or evaluate the performance reliability as well as degradation scenarios of coastal protection systems.

Natural Language Processing - NLP 2000

Natural Language Processing - NLP 2000 PDF Author: Dimitris N. Christodoulakis
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540451544
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 444

Book Description
This volume contains the papers prepared for the 2nd International Conference on Natural Language Processing, held 2-4 June in Patras, Greece. The conference program features invited talks and submitted papers, c- ering a wide range of NLP areas: text segmentation, morphological analysis, lexical knowledge acquisition and representation, grammar formalism and s- tacticparsing, discourse analysis,languagegeneration,man-machineinteraction, machine translation, word sense disambiguation, and information extraction. The program committee received 71 abstracts, of which unfortunately no more than 50% could be accepted. Every paper was reviewed by at least two reviewers. The fairness of the reviewing process is demonstrated by the broad spread of institutions and countries represented in the accepted papers. So many have contributed to the success of the conference. The primary credit, ofcourse, goes to theauthors andto the invitedspeakers. By theirpapers and their inspired talks they established the quality of the conference. Secondly, thanks should go to the referees and to the program committee members who did a thorough and conscientious job. It was not easy to select the papers to be presented. Last, but not least, my special thanks to the organizing committee for making this conference happen.
