Ghost Towns of Texas

Ghost Towns of Texas PDF Author: T. Lindsay Baker
Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press
ISBN: 9780806121895
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 214

Book Description
"The indefatigable T. Lindsay Baker has now turned his enormous mental and physical energies to the subject and has brought to view - if not to life -eighty-six Texas ghost towns for the reader's pleasure. Baker lists three criteria for inclusion: tangible remains, public access, and statewide coverage. In each case Baker comments about the town's founding, its former significance, and the reasons for its decline. There are maps and instructions for reaching each site and numerous photographs showing the past and present status of each. The contemporary photos were taken, in most instances, by Baker himself, who proves as adept a photographer as he is researcher and writer....Baker has done his work thoroughly and well, within limits imposed by necessity. He obviously had fun in the process and it shows in his prose."---New Mexico Historical Review

The Ranch That Was Us

The Ranch That Was Us PDF Author: Becky Crouch Patterson
Publisher: Trinity University Press
ISBN: 1595341269
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
Braiding strands of earthen insight with uproarious storytelling, Texas Hill Country legendary author Becky Patterson recreates the history of the Steiler Hill Ranch in twenty-four anecdotal chapters interspersed with original artwork. The result is a mixture of memoir and montage, treasure chest and tableau vivant of a world that’s beautiful, brash, and wonderfully heartbreaking. Patterson -- the daughter of Texas folk hero and self-proclaimed mayor of Luckenbach, Hondo Crouch -- has big shoes to fill and she does so successfully in this colorful collection of Hill Country and Texas ranch vignettes. Foreman and general cowboy guru Raymond Kuhlmann tells stories of the Goat King and German drinking songs, the buzzard traps and Mexican corridos that filled the nighttime pastures. First-person accounts and vivid historical narratives evoke the ranch’s past, overlaid with Patterson’s breathless personal histories of afternoons spent rescuing a doe in a nightgown, or saving a porcupine from a pack of dogs. This is a book that will connect you to whatever patch of earth you hold dear. It is poignant reminder of the landscapes we’ve forgotten to keep close, of the land that does not belong to us but simply is who we are. The Ranch That Was Us is an affectionate reminder to go outside and touch the earth that is you.

Leaving Germany for the freedom-loving republic of Texas, the brothers endure a treacherous ocean crossing before arriving in Galveston, Texas, in 1846. The harsh and rugged conditions of the Texas frontier force them to learn survival skills before inventor/teacher Jacob can explore his newly found dream of conquering human flight. From the Texas coastline encampment of Indianola to the settlements of Fredericksburg and Luckenbach, the brothers face the daunting task of building homes and schools while contending with the ever present danger of the Comanche Indians and roving outlaws. Looks Like Rain

Looks Like Rain PDF Author: Brian T. Atkinson
Publisher: Texas A&M University Press
ISBN: 1623499275
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
Mickey Newbury (1940–2002) grew up in Houston and moved to Nashville in the early 1960s, following his muse. He wrote top hits for many well-known artists, including Don Gibson, Andy Williams, Kenny Rogers, Tom Jones, and others. He is probably best known, however, for being name-checked in the song “Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)” by Waylon Jennings. Newbury has been cited by Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Townes Van Zandt, and many other eminent singer-songwriters as a primary influence. In his own independent fashion, Newbury helped to loosen the grip maintained for decades by the Nashville studio system, thus paving the way for later innovators like Willie Nelson, David Allan Coe, and others. He is still the only songwriter to produce hits on four different charts in the same year in 1968: “Just Dropped In (to See What Condition My Condition was In)” on the pop/rock charts, “Sweet Memories” on easy listening, “Time Is a Thief” on the R & B charts, and “Here Comes the Rain, Baby” in country. Following the successful pattern established in his previous works on Townes Van Zandt and Ray Wylie Hubbard, veteran music journalist Brian T. Atkinson has interviewed artists such as Kris Kristofferson, Bobby Bare, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, and many others to learn how Newbury’s influence continues to shape the musical and artistic approach of both seasoned and newer performers. Forewords by Larry Gatlin and Don McLean set the stage for a fascinating look back at one of the most revered songwriters and musicians of recent decades.

The Last Rescue

The Last Rescue PDF Author: Howard Wasdin
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
ISBN: 1595555951
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 283

Book Description
In the aftermath of war, a Navy SEAL finds faith, hope, and love. Howard Wasdin, author of SEAL Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy SEAL Sniper (twenty-two weeks on the New York Times best-seller list), survived the firestorm made famous in Black Hawk Down only to return to a world without support, without a mission, and soon without his family. Wounded in Mogadishu and facing a torturous journey of rehabilitation and recovery, he came home to find his marriage falling apart and his world upended. When he met Debbie, an accountant emerging from her own trial by fire, he realized this might be his last hope, and the two together began a journey of rediscovering their faith in God and their ability to trust in God’s goodness. The Last Rescue is an unforgettable tale of brokenness and healing, going deep into the firing line of modern warfare, through the agony of broken marriages, and onto a path of redemption and love. With a clear-eyed view of the inevitability of heartache and the power of God’s faithfulness, Howard and Debbie remind us that no matter what our circumstances, we should never, ever, give up hope.
