Book Description
Excerpt from Manual of the Science of Religion I have therefore, on the advice of my father, under taken a translation of the book. In carrying out this work I have not only had the benefit of his help, whenever I wanted it, but likewise that of the author himself. There were some technical and intricate passages which I could not have translated myself, and which my father has translated for me. Book Description
Excerpt from Manual of the Science of Religion When two years ago I undertook, at the request of the publisher of a collection of theological manuals, to treat the Science of Religion, I at once realised that I was not required to write an encyclopaedia of the subject in question, or a book of reference in which all names should occur, but a manual which should present, in a readable shape, the present state of these studies, and distinguish between the safely established results and those questions which are as yet unsettled. I have worked therefore with this object in view, and have tried to bring the results of the studies that have been carried on in the Science of Religion nearer to students of theology and to all those who interest themselves generally in the history of civilisation. I need not here speak of the importance of these studies for theology as well as for philosophy, and a few remarks will suffice as to the manner in which I have tried to carry out my work. In the introductory section I have collected some material for solving the leading questions which occupy the Science of Religion. Manual of Theology (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Thomas B. Strong

Book Description
Excerpt from Manual of Theology Theology is the science which deals with the Being and Nature of God. Christian Theology is the expression and analysis of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. All speculation into the First Cause of the world, the ground of moral obligation, even the immortality of the human soul, is or may be theological; that is, any one of these questions may be so discussed as to bring before us the notion of a Supreme Being, who made the world, whose nature is the source of the distinction of right and wrong, who brought man's soul into being, and preserves it continuously from dissolution. On the other hand, all such questions fail to be theological just in proportion as the idea of the Supreme Being is dropped out of sight. They must then be treated as subor dinate sections of physics, or of psychology, or of metaphysics. They take their theological colour from their contact with the idea of a Supreme Being, and no treatment of them apart from this idea is, in the strict sense, theological at all. As for the Being and Nature of God, apart from the Christian revelation of Him, we must derive our knowledge of it from the theological treatment of the questions mentioned above. By reflection upon the order of nature, of a certain kind, we reach the notion of a Creator. By reflection of a certain kind upon the moral law we reach the notion of a Personal Ruler of mankind, who rewards and punishes; and this result leads on to the discussion of the Immorality of Man. These are the contents of Natural Theology, as it is called; and they represent more or less completely the area over which man can move in the way of independent Speculation. Book Description
Excerpt from The Science of Religion, Fundamental Faiths Expressed, in Modern Terms The prospect of death influences individual acts and sits as an unbidden spectral guest in the coun sels of nations. Death confronts us wherever we turn. It injects its virus into the heart of the germinating oak, breathes its withering breath upon the budding flower, and sets its seal upon the new-born child. Its sombre shadow falls across life's every pleasing prospect, and its skeleton hand adds a drop of gall to every cup of pleasure. It is a party to every human contract, and love's joys and privileges are held subject to its caprice. The fear of it springs up with every form of intelligent life, and remains until at last the quivering heart is still. Very few people have escaped its ravages. Nearly all have stood helplessly by and seen the last breath of a loved one gasped away, leaving the dear face pallid and expressionless, and the once Winsome eyes glazed and immobile. Arcana of Spiritualism

Arcana of Spiritualism PDF Author: Hudson Tuttle

Book Description
Excerpt from Arcana of Spiritualism: A Manual of Spiritual Science and Philosophy IT has been suggested that this volume would be better understood if I gave my spiritual experience and method of writing. In complying, I exclude everything outside my psychic sensitiveness. That I was born in what was then a wilderness on the southern shores of Lake Erie (ohio, and for the early years of my life to the time I began to write for the superior intelligences had exceedingly limited social and educational advantages, may be of interest to the reader as showing how the communications transcended my own capabilities. No one can write of the vicissitudes, emotions, or thoughts of a medium as well as the medium himself. By the essential conditions of mediumship, he is sensitive and easily disturbed by antagonism. What to others would be a jest, to him becomes agonizing, and he is often disturbed by causes unknown by their subtlety. The voice of censure is unbearably harsh; a word of praise lifts his soul with unspeakable delight; he is a bundle of nerves, tense, sensitive to a breath, responding to a touch. These conditions are not of his seeking, but are thrust upon him, and he cannot cast them off. Like all human capabilities, sensitiveness is susceptible of culture, of intensification, and of being lost by neglect or abuse; of yielding unspeakable delight or pain.
