Book Description
The presence of pollutants in the environment is a matter of debate since longtime. People are always more aware of the problem that is mainly related to anthropogenic compounds, and analytical methods able to detect low-amount pollutants are required. These compounds are strictly regulated by worldwide legislations aimed to develop accurate environmental risk assessment. Overall, environmental analysis is aimed to monitor and detect levels of contaminants in the water, atmosphere, soils, and other environmental conditions. One of the main challenges in this kind of analysis relies on the extreme complexity and variability of the sample to be analyzed. Compounds of interest, in fact, can be present in various matrices deeply variable according to the origin of collected samples. Indeed, a reliable and versatile analytical approach is necessary to overcome these challenging problems.Mass spectrometry (MS) is a wide used analytical technique in which ionized chemical species are sorted on the basis of their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z). MS is commonly used with qualitative and quantitative purposes, representing a high-performances instrument to be used in several fields. Moreover, mass spectrometers can be easily coupled to gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC), thus resulting in an excellent sensitive and selective tool to perform environmental analysis. Currently, MS-based methods are commonly used for environmental analyses allowing an accurate and reproducible identification and quantitation of a huge variety of pollutants, even in low amounts. This book covers several MS-based approaches for environmental analysis, illustrating a first overview of commonly used platforms followed by some interesting examples of applications. The Section 1 reports current trends in environmental analysis, highlighting the state-of-the-art of international legislations and future perspectives. The Section 2 is an overview of MS-based methods and platforms currently used for environmental analysis. MS-based metabolomics, lipidomics and other classical approaches, along with their features and limitations, are described. Moreover, some specific techniques such as the targeted parallel reaction monitoring, are included. Finally, the Section 3 contains recent and innovative applications of MS-based methods for environmental analysis. Among others, MS-based approaches have been used for the multiple screening of 90 emerging contaminants in liquid and solid environmental matrices, and for the detection of pollutants as alkanolamines, thallium and pesticides.

Mass Spectrometry in Environmental Sciences

Mass Spectrometry in Environmental Sciences PDF Author: O. Hutzinger
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461323614
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 584

Book Description
During the past ten years a variety of methods involving mass spectrom etry have been developed for the analysis of environmentally important compounds. Much has been accomplished in that period to solve some of the important problems in the field. Growth of this methodology and its accomplishments has reached the point where an individual scientist can no longer have an in-depth knowledge of all the areas involved. We have attempted to provide this in-depth picture to those scientists con cerned by having the important topics treated by experts in the subject matter. In order to provide all the relevant material in one volume we begin with the general topics which provide the basic background material necessary to understand the techniques discussed in the in-depth topics. These general chapters are kept brief, containing only the essentials needed by the working scientist to deal with the practical applications. References in these chapters are chosen to permit a more complete study of each chapter. The concept for this book was developed during the activities of two of the editors under a NATO travel grant. These editors gratefully acknowledge this support which made the initial planning of this book possible. The editors would like to thank the individual authors of each chap ter for their cooperation and generously giving of their time for this project.

Applications of Time-of-Flight and Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry in Environmental, Food, Doping, and Forensic Analysis

Applications of Time-of-Flight and Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry in Environmental, Food, Doping, and Forensic Analysis PDF Author:
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0444635734
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 524

Book Description
Applications of Time-of-Flight and Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry in Environmental, Food, Doping, and Forensic Analysis deals with the use of high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS) in the analysis of small organic molecules. Over the past few years, time-of-flight (ToF) and Orbitrap MS have both experienced tremendous growth in a great number of analytical sectors and are now well established in many laboratories where high requirements are placed on analytical performance. This book gives a head-to-head comparison of these two technologies that compete directly with each other. As users with hands-on experience in both techniques, the authors provide a balanced description of the strengths and weaknesses of both techniques. In the vast majority of cases, ToF-MS and Orbitrap-MS have been used for qualitative purposes, mainly identification of discrete molecular entities such as drug metabolites or transformation products of environmental contaminants. This paradigm is now changing as quantitative capabilities are increasingly being explored, as are non-target approaches for unbiased broad-scope screening. In view of the continuous innovation of high-resolution MS instrument manufacturers in designing and developing more powerful machines, technological advances in both hardware and software are considerable, with many novel applications. This book summarizes and analyzes these trends. The compilation of selected examples from diverse analytical fields will allow the readers to discover not only the potential of high-resolution MS in their sector, but also shows advances in other fields that rely on hi-res MS. Provides comprehensive coverage of applications of time-of-flight and orbitrap mass spectrometry in environmental, food, doping, and forensic analysis Explores a variety of specialized techniques, giving a balanced description of the strengths and weaknesses of each Presents a general overview of imaging techniques within analysis
