Lionel Blaxland was a pilot with No. 40 Squadron RFC, flying on the Western Front during 1917 and 1918. The squadron's FE8s proved vastly inferior to the German Fokker Eindekker, Albatros and Halberstadt aircraft. They were also often outgunned when their unreliable machine guns jammed in dogfights. 40 Squadron was flying reconnaissance missions for the ground troops and attacking German observation points and balloons, also attacking any German aircraft they encountered. The German squadrons were flying to defend their lines and attack Allied reconnaissance sorties. The result was that the RFC were always forced to fight over enemy held territory and if damaged were inevitably confronted with a lengthy flight against a prevailing headwind to reach safety behind their lines. The squadrons casualties were high.This book is based on Blaxland's flying log books and his five photograph albums of the period 1915 to 1920. It relates the difficult conditions under which the squadron was operating and gives an intriguing insight into operational life at that time. Fighter Ace 'Mick' Mannock joined 40 Squadron as a novice and Blaxford took him under his wing to protect and advise him until he grew to appreciate the dangers of flying in hostile skies. Mannock went on to account for 73 aerial victories and was the top scoring British fighter ace of the war.
