Innovations in Neonatal-perinatal Medicine

Innovations in Neonatal-perinatal Medicine PDF Author: Oommen P. Mathew
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814280046
Category : Medical

Pages : 374

Book Description
Innovations in technology and new therapies have changed the face of medicine in the last few decades. These include advances in fetal diagnosis (preimplantation genetics, chorionic villous sampling and amniocentesis), drugs that have been developed to treat unique conditions in neonates such as respiratory distress syndrome (surfactant) and pulmonary hypertension (inhaled nitric oxide), as well as technological advances and interventions resulting in diagnostic (ultrasounds and MRI) and therapeutic interventions (intrauterine transfusion to ECMO). Research in fertility treatments has resulted in test tube babies and cloned animals, and that has also fostered technological advances in diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. The primary purpose of Innovations in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine is to highlight these innovations in technology and therapy that have not only changed the way doctors deliver care to fetus and neonate but also reduced neonatal mortality thereby saving millions of lives in the process. These issues are addressed by the authors who are experts in their respective fields. the book will be valuable not only to healthcare providers but also to educators and policy makers.

Innovative Technologies and Signal Processing in Perinatal Medicine

Innovative Technologies and Signal Processing in Perinatal Medicine PDF Author: Danilo Pani
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030544036
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 239

Book Description
Pregnancy is a critical time for the health of the mother and the fetus, with important potential risks for both. Tools for antenatal diagnosis and pregnancy monitoring can support prevention and management of potential risks and complications. In particular, the perinatal period, spanning from the third trimester of pregnancy up to one month after birth, is the most critical for the baby. For this reason, in the last decades, biomedical engineering supported and fostered the scientific research towards the identification of new models, parameters, algorithms, and tools that can improve the quality of fetal monitoring, predict the outcomes and allow physicians to intervene in an appropriate manner to ensure a healthy future for the baby. This book follows the First International Summer School on Technologies and Signal Processing in Perinatal Medicine and reflects some of its most important master lectures. It represents a valuable guide for students and young researchers approaching this topic for the first time, as well as experienced researchers and practitioners looking for a clear representation of the themes and techniques presented by recognized experts in the field. Presents current and innovative technologies for fetal and neonatal monitoring Emphasis on both technology/signal processing and clinical aspects Offers a clear didactic approach to the subject matter

Perinatology

Perinatology PDF Author: Renato Augusto Moreira de Sá
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030834344
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 1295

Book Description
This book presents the latest evidence-based guidelines for perinatal management and is designed to help obstetricians and neonatologists minimize complications and offer patients the best possible care. Since 1960, there has been a significant increase in basic and clinical investigations on normal and pathological pregnancy in the developed world. This has provided insights into the physiopathology of pregnant women, fetuses and newborns and led to the development of new technologies, bringing about a new medical subspecialty: perinatal medicine. The book is divided into eight main sections: The first examines basic periconceptional care and discusses the ethical aspects of perinatology. The next section focuses on prenatal considerations, such as the nutritional aspects of gestation and puerperium, physical exercise during pregnancy, routine laboratory tests, prenatal care of multiple gestations and the role of the neonatologist in prenatal care. The third and fourth sections then explore fetal evaluation, and clinical intercurrences in pregnancy, respectively. The next section addresses pregnancy complications: prevention, diagnosis and management. The sixth section covers the basic aspects of congenital infections and the seventh examines labor and delivery aspects. Lastly, the final section includes chapters on neonatal assistance. Written by leading experts in obstetrics, neonatology, and perinatology, this thoroughly updated, comprehensive resource reflects the latest information in all areas, including genetics and imaging.

Advances in Perinatal Medicine

Advances in Perinatal Medicine PDF Author: Aubrey Milunsky
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 147574451X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 451

Book Description
The state of health care isreflected by perinatal and neonatal morbidity and mortality as weIl as by the frequencies of long-term neurological and developmental disorders. Many factors, some without immediately recognizable significance to childbearing and many still unknown, undoubtedly contribute beneficially or adversely to the outcome of pregnancy. Knowledge concerning the impact of such factors on the fetus and survivinginfant iscritical. Confounding analysesofpregnancy outcome, especially these past 2 or 3 decades, are the effects of newly undertaken invasive or inactive therapeutic approaches coupled with the advent of high technology. Many innovations have been introduced without serious efforts to evaluate their impact prospectively and objectively. The consequences of therapeutic misadventures character ized the past; it seems they have been replaced to a degree by some of the complications of applied technology. Examples abound: after overuse of oxygen was recognized to cause retrolental fibroplasia, its restriction led to an increase in both neonatal death rates and neurologic damage in surviving infants. Administration of vitamin K to prevent neonatal hemorrhagic disease, particularly when given in what we now know as excessive dosage, occasionally resulted in kernicterus. Prophy lactic sulfonamide use had a similar end result. More recent is the observation of bronchopulmonary dysplasia as a complication of re spirator therapy for hyaline membrane disease. The decade of the eighties opened with the all-time highest rate of cesarean section in the United States.

Controversies in Perinatal Medicine

Controversies in Perinatal Medicine PDF Author: Jose M. Carrera
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781842142301
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 316

Book Description
The introduction of new diagnostic technologies such as Doppler technology and three-dimensional ultrasonography has changed the nature of perinatal medicine. However, the rush to introduce new procedures has sometimes compromised the rigor necessary in the initial analyses of their uses. The field is moving ahead so rapidly that health-care protocols can quickly lose their validity and controversy soon arises. Controversies in Perinatal Medicine examines the current state of the science through the lens of evidence-based medicine. With expert editorial direction and contributions from leaders in the field, the book guides readers through the maze of new technologies and procedures and explores the issues they raise in terms of scientific methodology. It focuses on selected issues in quality care of the fetus and the mother; early diagnosis and decision making; how and if new diagnostic technologies affect outcomes; contributions of ultrasou nd technology to the body of knowledge; screening and treatment for prematurity; changes in cesarean section rates; and ethical issues. Controversies in Perinatal Medicine gives you a clear picture of the developments in diagnosis and treatment made possible by new technologies and the insight to resolve the issues involved in using them.
