The East Coast Main Line 1939-1959 (Volume 2)

The East Coast Main Line 1939-1959 (Volume 2) PDF Author: Peter Tuffrey

Book Description
• The first detailed study of this huge mainline through its operational history • Features extended commentaries from the authors, rich in detail • Superbly illustrated with black and white photographs, many never seen before In this second and final volume, the whole of the East Coast Main Line between King’s Cross and Edinburgh Waverley stations is examined closely, with a particular emphasis on the ways and structures: the line, stations, connections, yards, and other physical features. Interposed are accounts of the traffic at the principal stations – including connecting and branch line services – with observations on changes over the period 1939 to 1959. Some emphasis is placed on freight traffic on account of its importance and, perhaps, its relative unfamiliarity to the reader. The lines, stations and many other elements are described as they were in August 1939, but as some plans on which they are based are dated before the late 1930s, there may be marginal differences from the precise layout in 1939.

Book Description
Although goods traffic accounted in many cases for a higher proportion of railway companies’ revenue than passengers, the buildings associated with it have received very little attention in comparison to their passenger counterparts. They once played as important a role in distribution as the ‘big sheds’ near motorway junctions do today. The book shows how the basic design of goods sheds evolved early in the history of railways, and how the form of goods sheds reflected the function they performed. Although goods sheds largely functioned in the same way, there was considerable scope for variety of architectural expression in their external design. The book brings out how they varied considerably in size from small timber huts to the massive warehouses seen in major cities. It also looks at how many railway companies developed standard designs for these buildings towards the end of the 19th century and at how traditional materials such as timber, brick and stone gave way to steel and concrete in the 20th This building type is subject to a high level of threat with development pressure in urban and suburban areas for both car parking and housing having already accounted for the demise of many of these buildings. Despite this, some 600 have been identified as still extant and the book will, for the first time, provide a comprehensive gazetteer of the surviving examples.

Book Description
This is the first detailed and comprehensive study of the shipshed complexes which housed the great navies of the Greco-Roman world, including Athens and Carthage. These complexes represented some of the largest and most expensive building projects of antiquity, and the volume provides a comprehensive survey of the archaeological and literary evidence. It explains how the buildings were carefully designed to keep warships dry and out of reach of shipworm, whilst enabling them to be launched quickly, easily and safely when required. It also serves as a handbook for archaeologists who may excavate such buildings, which are often difficult to identify and interpret. The analytical chapters are complemented by a full and detailed catalogue of known sheds, with plans for all the major sites specially drawn for easy comparison. The book thus provides an indispensable guide for all those interested in these buildings and in the maritime infrastructure of the ancient world.

Book Description
A fascinating tale of a young school boy's exploits in his quest to spot every steam locomotive in the UK during the 1950s & 1960s, until steam finished on British Railways on 4th August 1968. at the time I lived in North Hertfordshire, so my trainspotting days began mainly at Hitchin on the ECML. I later moved to Guildford and carried on from there. I was fortunate in that I recorded virtually all my activities and furthermore have retained those records to this day. In those days before computers and mobile phones Trainspotting was one of the most popular hobbies in the country. My travels covered virtually the whole of the UK over a 10 year period. During that time along with my friends we had lots of interesting and sometimes amusing incidents; such as the Castleford 'Snow' occurrence; contretemps with a herd of Bullocks; run-ins with the law and shed foremen; sleeping rough on many occasions; a scary walk over Crumlin viaduct; our coach catching fire on the M1; plus many more. we visited locomotive sheds over 600 times during which I recorded in excess of 21,000 engines! We travelled by any means available; coach; bus; mini-bus; bicycle; car; motorbike; train; ferry; and a lot of hitchhiking! The latter including one such ride on a 9F which took me right into the shed I was about to bunk! We would take every opportunity to be by our beloved steam engines, daily on the way to & from school, then again in the evenings and every 2-3 weeks off an a tour somewhere in the UK some of these lasted 4 -5 days, often with rather dubious overnight accommodation! these tours were to all parts of the UK, from South Wales to Aberdeen, the Northwest, Northeast, Midlands, North Wales, south to Brighton, Southampton, Isle of Wight, West country and dozens of other locations The book has full colour card covers, is A4 portrait style of 185 pages and over 100 B & W photos. At the end of the text are two appendices, the first lists every shed visited and the relevant dates, the second lists in chronological order every locomotive seen, its shed and date. Barrie
