Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on the Languages of the South Andaman Group of Tribes The Andamanese languages are very co pious, the people having names for many animate and inanimate -objects, and words to express the parts of those objects, their actions, and conditions, in great detail. A complete Dictionary of any one Andamanese language would contain many thousand words, and would involve years of special labour; my present intention, therefore, is rather to give a general idea of the languages, and mental attitude of the people of the South Andaman Group of tribes; and, with a Comparative Vocabulary and its Analysis, to show how the words and lan guages are constructed, and how the different languages compare with each other. As the Andamanese race, in the Great Andaman, is now almost extinct, more than this cannot be done. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Encountering The Adivasi Question

Encountering The Adivasi Question PDF Author: P. Bandhu
Publisher: Studera Press
ISBN: 9385883925
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 356

Book Description
The main problem facing most Adivasi groups in the country is displacement and loss of their own original habitats and livelihood through ‘development’ projects like dams, tourism and wildlife sanctuaries. By generally categorising them as girijan (mountain dwellers), vanavasis (forest dwellers), or tribal (with its connotations of primitive and backward), or even the popular jangli (wild), in official parlance and in the mass media, they are robbed of their identity, dignity and rights as among the first peoples of this subcontinent, who earlier enjoyed economic and political freedom and autonomy in the form of self-rule. All over India the process of uprooting indigenous people from their rich culture is on – the disruption of a way of life, fundamental to which is the belief that it is not the earth which belongs to man, but man who belongs to the earth.

In the Forest

In the Forest PDF Author: Vishvajit Pandya
Publisher: University Press of America
ISBN: 0761842721
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 540

Book Description
There are always at least two 'histories' of encounter or contact, as each party would tell the story differently, but where and when is it really the 'first contact' and for whom? This book deploys an analytical framework developed from Semiotics to have both sides of the story address each other. It is ethnography of dialogue, emerging from textual representation by outsiders and its relationship to visual response and presentations by the Andaman Islanders that this book aims to present as the critical 'ethnography of history.' The section on Visuality looks at how the 'Other' is incorporated into an organized knowledge-system, including Ongee myths and songs about outsiders and the early photographs of tribal people by British settlers and ethnographers. The section on Materiality concerns the investment in things made, to influence natural processes or to distinguish the human body, and discusses how they are transacted between cultures that come into contact. The concluding section on history addresses encounters and developments in which the experiences of both tribal and settler are implicated more thoroughly than in the transaction of objects. Thus juxtaposing alternative perspectives on change indicates areas of experience unaccounted for in the dominant discourse and shows the provisionality of images.

* It has QR codes which can be scanned to gain access to rare documentations: audio-visuals of Great Andamanese songs and tales"It is fortunate that a scholar with Professor Abbi's tenacity, as well as her scientific credentials, was available and willing to conduct this work... The volume is a superb introduction for the layperson to the wonderful world that Professor Abbi has opened up for us." - Bernard Comrie, Santa Barbara, California. "For two decades now, Abbi has marshalled the full intellectual and strategic weight of her training, disciplinary expertise and socio-cultural capital to document, preserve and share with the world the voices, songs, stories and laughter of the Great Andamanese." - Mark Turin, University of British Columbia, Vancouver. The Andaman Islands -- Great Andaman, Little Andaman, and North Sentinel Islands have been home for milleniums to four tribes: the Great Andamanese, Onge, Jarawa, and Sentinelese. Their languages are known by the same name as that of the tribes. 'Great Andamanese' is a generic term representing ten languages among a family of languages that were once spoken by ten different tribes living in the north, south, and middle of the Great Andaman Islands. These languages were mutually intelligible like a link in a chain. However, today, Great Andamanese is a moribund language of the only-surviving pre-Neolithic tribe, breathing its last breath. When a language is on the verge of extinction, its history, culture, ecological base, knowledge of the biodiversity, ethno-linguistic practices, and the identity of its community -- everything is endangered. This is what prompted Prof. Anvita Abbi to conduct a research study to give life to the lost oral heritage of the vanishing world of the Great Andamanese. Voices from the Lost Horizon is a collection of a number of folk tales and songs of the Great Andamanese. These stories and songs represent the first-ever collection rendered to the Prof. Abbi and her team by the Great Andamanese people in local settings. The compilation comes with audio and video recordings of the stories and songs to retain the originality and orality of the narratives.
