Cet ouvrage est le résultat de cette mobilisation : vingt-cinq contributions de spécialistes de notoriété internationale ou de plus jeunes chercheurs, africains et européens, qui abordent chacun avec rigueur un pan de l'histoire riche, complexe et trop souvent méconnue du continent. La construction à la fois chronologique et thématique de l'ouvrage permet de réfuter point par point les poncifs hérités de l'ethnologie coloniale et de changer le regard porté sur l'Afrique. Cette riposte n'est pas une affaire d'Africains blessés dans leur dignité, mais une entreprise d'historiens, ceux du Nord comme du Sud, soucieux de rétablir la vérité des faits contre toutes les tentatives de manipulation.
