Book Description
“Tolstaya’s essays in this compact, historically significant volume offer a fascinating, highly intelligent analysis of Russian society and politics” (Publishers Weekly). These twenty essays address the politics, culture, and literature of Russia with both flair and erudition. Passionate and opinionated, often funny, and using ample material from daily life to underline their ideas and observations, Tatyana Tolstaya’s piees range across a variety of subjects. They move in one unique voice from Soviet women, classical Russian cooking, and the bliss of snow to the effect of Pushkin and freedom on Russia writers; from the death of the tsar and the Great Terror to the changes brought by Gorbachev, Yeltsin, and Putin in the last decade. Throughout this engaging volume, the Russian temperament comes into high relief. Whether addressing literature or reporting on politics, Tolstaya’s writing conveys a deep knowledge of her country and countrymen. Pushkin’s Children is a book for anyone interested in the Russian soul. “Tolstaya is simply the most fearless female observer of the very male-centric culture . . . of the USSR.” —Ben Dickinson, Elle

Children's Literature as Communication

Children's Literature as Communication PDF Author: Roger D. Sell
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027297290
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
In this book, members of the ChiLPA Project explore the children’s literature of several different cultures, ranging from ancient India, nineteenth century Russia, and the Soviet Union, to twentieth century Britain, America, Australia, Sweden, and Finland. The research covers not only the form and content of books for children, but also their potential social functions, especially within education. These two perspectives are brought together within a theory of children’s literature as one among other forms of communication, an approach that sees the role of literary scholars, critics and teachers as one of mediation. Part I deals with the way children’s writers and picturebook-makers draw on a culture’s available resources of orality, literacy, intertextuality, and image. Part II examines their negotiation of major issues such as the child adult distinction, gender, politics, and the Holocaust. Part III discusses children’s books as used within language education programmes, with particular attention to young readers’ pragmatic processing of differences between the context of writing and their own context of reading.

The Explosive World of Tatyana N. Tolstaya's Fiction

The Explosive World of Tatyana N. Tolstaya's Fiction PDF Author: Helena Goscilo
Publisher: M.E. Sharpe
ISBN: 9780765638908
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 244

Book Description
Helena Goscilo spotlights Tolstaya's rich interweaving of myth, folklore, songs, children's games, and literary texts into stories of stunning imaginative power. Tolstaya's stylistic pyrotechnics vividly illuminate immemorial concerns about life's meaning, the role of art and fantasy in the modern world, the nature of memory and narrative, and the status of "innocence" and "truth." Finally, The Explosive World of Tatyanna N. Tolstaya's Fiction assesses how Tolstaya's rhetorical strategies have led critics to label her poetic prose "postmodernist," although she ultimately emerges as a writer of traditional neohumanist values with a modernist technique.
