Book Description
The humanities are the human elements in any culture. In the West these humanities have ordinarily been anchored in and derivative of Eurocentric culture, and have been centered on elite and art-related subjects. As such they have strengthened and perpetuated elite culture, and have been restricted and narrow in their point of view. They have enervated the modern humanities which in a democratic society insist on having democratic humanities. Democratic humanities demand a new point of view which demands respect for and dignity to the common aspects of culture as well as inclusion of those elements. It is time the call went ringing through the land: The Old is Sick, Please Bring Assistance! Rejuvenate the humanities! The essays in this volume are Assistance, an effort to demonstrate the inalienable need for new subjects in the humanities canon and the value of those subjects as parts of the New Humanities. The twenty essays in this effort to bring new vitality to the humanities range through fields familiar in life but unfamiliar in the humanities canon. They include leisure, folk cultures, material culture, pornography, comics, animal rights, Black studies, travelling and, of course, the bugbear of academics, television. The authors include some of the outstanding scholar-observers of today, all of whom address their subjects in cool, dispassionate and convincing reason. The subject of revitalizing the Humanities is important indeed. This volume will go a long way toward alerting the intellectual community to the desperate need to bring new understanding to the study of the modern humanities.

Gatsby

Gatsby PDF Author: Bob Batchelor
Publisher: Scarecrow Press
ISBN: 0810891964
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 319

Book Description
In 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald produced his third novel, a slim work for which he had high expectations. Despite such hopes, the novel received mixed reviews and lackluster sales. Over the decades, however, the reputation of The Great Gatsby has grown and millions of copies have been sold. One of the bestselling novels of all time, it is also considered one of the most significant achievements in twentieth-century fiction. But what makes Gatsby great? Why do we still care about this book more than eighty-five years after it was published? And how does Gatsby help us make sense of our own lives and times? In Gatsby: The Cultural History of the Great American Novel, Bob Batchelor explores the birth, life, and enduring influence of The Great Gatsby—from the book’s publication in 1925 through today’s headlines filled with celebrity intrigue, corporate greed, and a roller-coaster economy. A cultural historian, Batchelor explains why and how the novel has become part of the fiber of the American ethos and an important tool in helping readers to better comprehend their lives and the broader world around them. A “biography” of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece, this book examines The Great Gatsby’s evolution from a nearly-forgotten 1920s time capsule to a revered cultural touchstone. Batchelor explores how this embodiment of the American Dream has become an iconic part of our national folklore, how the central themes and ideas emerging from the book—from the fulfillment of the American Dream to the role of wealth in society—resonate with contemporary readers who struggle with similar uncertainties today. By exploring the timeless elements of reinvention, romanticism, and relentless pursuit of the unattainable, Batchelor confirms the novel’s status as “The Great American Novel” and, more importantly, explains to students, scholars, and fans alike what makes Gatsby so great.

SUMMARY - Ending Aging: The Rejuvenation Breakthroughs That Could Reverse Human Aging In Our Lifetime By Aubrey De Grey And Michael Rae PDF Author: Shortcut Edition

Book Description
* Our summary is short, simple and pragmatic. It allows you to have the essential ideas of a big book in less than 30 minutes. As you read this summary, you will learn that an anthropological revolution such as the world has never known is at hand: not only slowing down and stopping the aging process, but even reversing it. You will also learn that : we have been conditioned since the dawn of time by the inevitability of aging and death; of the 150,000 people who die every day in the world, 100,000 die of old age; our reactions to revolutionary progress are sometimes irrational; the acceptance of the aging process must become increasingly politically incorrect; certain cellular and molecular changes must take place if we are to fight effectively against the aging process; a militant spirit is indispensable for the diffusion of the author's theses. All scientists who study the biology of aging agree on one point: one day, relatively soon, we will be able to reverse the aging process using techniques still under study today. Among these scientists, Dr. de Grey stands out for his constancy and combativeness. His fight against aging has become his raison d'être, and this book is a kind of manifesto. In this book, the author demystifies anti-aging techniques, making them easily accessible to all. A salutary work, which has already been praised by newspapers as serious as the "Wall Street Journal" or the "New York Times". *Buy now the summary of this book for the modest price of a cup of coffee!

Why Reading Books Still Matters

Why Reading Books Still Matters PDF Author: Martha C. Pennington
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351809067
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 246

Book Description
Bringing together strands of public discourse about valuing personal achievement at the expense of social values and the impacts of global capitalism, mass media, and digital culture on the lives of children, this book challenges the potential of science and business to solve the world’s problems without a complementary emphasis on social values. The selection of literary works discussed illustrates the power of literature and human arts to instill such values and foster change. The book offers a valuable foundation for the field of literacy education by providing knowledge about the importance of language and literature that educators can use in their own teaching and advocacy work.

Rejuvenating the Sun and Avoiding Other Global Catastrophes

Rejuvenating the Sun and Avoiding Other Global Catastrophes PDF Author: Martin Beech
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0387681280
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 230

Book Description
Canadian academic Martin Beech has written a text that attempts to cross the line between science fiction and science fact. Put simply, his book details a method that just might be able to stop the Sun from losing its power and, ultimately, save humanity and the Earth itself. It investigates the idea that the distant future evolution of our Sun might be controlled (or ‘asteroengineered’) so that it maintains its present-day energy output rather than becoming a bloated red giant star: a process that would destroy all life on Earth.
