Book Description
Forest ecosystems are more than just assemblages of trees. They are associations of flora, fauna, and abiotic entities, mineral coesxisting in complex unity, In recognition of this fact, the FIA program of the USDA Forest Service conducts an inventory of our Nations forest ecosystems that not only estimates tree components, but also inventories numerous non timber ecosystem attributes

Book Description
The Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program of the USDA Forest Service conducts a national inventory of forests of the United States. A subset of FIA permanent inventory plots are sampled every year for indicators of forest health such as soils, understory vegetation, and down woody materials (DWM). The DWM indicator provides estimates of down and dead woody materials in forest ecosystems. Estimates of DWM are used in assessments of forest-ecosystem attributes such as fuel loadings, carbon stocks, and structural diversity. As defined by the FIA program, DWM comprises fine and coarse woody debris, slash piles, duff, litter, and shrub/herbs cover and height. Components of DWM are sampled using the line-intersect method, point sampling, and fixed-radius sampling. DWM data analyses are an integral part of national inventory reports, multi-scale forest-health reports, and wildlife-habitat, and fuel-loading assessments. The DWM inventory began in 2001 and currently is implemented in 46 states and two territories. In this report we provide the rationale and context for a national inventory of DWM, describe woody material components sampled by the DWM indicator, discuss the sampling protocol used to measure the DWM components and corresponding estimation procedures, and provide guidance on managing and processing DWM data and incorporating that information into pertinent inventory analyses and research projects.

Forest Mensuration

Forest Mensuration PDF Author: John A. Kershaw, Jr.
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118902017
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 632

Book Description
Forest mensuration – the science of measurement applied to forest vegetation and forest products – holds value for basic ecology as well as sustainable forest management. As demands on the world’s forests have grown, scientists and professionals are increasingly called on to quantify forest composition, structure, and the goods and services forests provide. Grounded in geometry, sampling theory, and ecology as well as practical field experience, forest mensuration offers opportunities for creative problem solving and critical thinking. This fifth edition of the classic volume, Forest Mensuration, includes coverage of traditional and emerging topics, with attention to SI and Imperial units throughout. The book has been reorganised from the fourth edition to better integrate non-timber and ecological aspects of forest mensuration at the tree, stand, forest, and landscape scales throughout. The new edition includes new chapters that specifically address the integration of remotely sensed data in the forest inventory process, and inventory methods for dead and downed wood. One unifying theme, not only for traditional forestry but for the non-timber inventory and for remote sensing, is the use of covariates to make sampling more efficient and spatially explicit. This is introduced in the introductory chapter on statistics and the chapter on sampling designs has been restructured to highlight this approach and lay the foundation for further learning. New examples will be developed throughout the textbook with an emphasis on current issues and international practice. Students in applied forestry programs will find ample coverage of forest products and timber inventory, while expanded material on biodiversity, biomass and carbon inventory, downed dead wood, and the growing role of remote sensing in forest assessment will be valuable to a broader audience in applied ecology.
